Is the liquid diet to help prepare us for new life change and too prepare our stomachs? So they are empty for surgery?

The liquid pre-op diet serves many purposes. From what my surgeon had explained to me:

It helps to shrink your liver (the smaller your liver the easier it is to perform a laparoscopic surgery because if the liver is too large it can get in the way.

It helps to empty your stomach.

It helps you to become accustomed to the full liquid diet you will be on for approximately 2 weeks after surgery (depending on your surgeons requirements).

Hope this helps :-)

I had to do a week of 1 high Protein low carb meal and Protein shakes. This week, it's all liquid Protein. My surgery is Tuesday and my BMI was 35. My doc makes everyone who has a lower BMI do this. Patients with higher BMI's start 4 weeks out.

The pre-surgery liquid diet is to shrink the liver to give surgeon more room to move around. You'll also lose some weight, or should. I start my pre-surgery diet in a few days.

  • Two weeks of liquids are to shrink the liver. Tough as nails to get through though

My surgeon does 2 days for bypass and one day liquid diet for sleeve. I am also on the lower end of BMI but I think that is for everyone he sees. I was sleeved 12/09 and did 2 days liquid as I went in for bypass but he said I did not have enough room to do bypass so he sleeved me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
