Insurance approval questions...

Recommended Posts

Hello all... I am new to the group. I'm almost 3 months into my pre-op, with a sleep study scheduled for next week. I have been stressing over my insurance approval. My BMI is 37, and my surgeon says I'll need my sleep study to show sleep apnea to qualify. He seemed confident about that. Although high blood pressure and diabetes run rampant in my family, I don't have either of these. I do have a history of yo-yo weight loss, depression & asthma, and previous high blood pressure. Has anyone had difficulty getting approved with a lower than 40 BMI? Or just the opposite, gotten approved no problem?

I have Anthem BC/BS.

It sounds like to me they won't approve it unless you have one cormibid? What insurance do you have? I know with my Aetna you have to have one with a bmi of 40 and under or you do not qualify.

I have anthem BC/BS in NY. I believe that's what my surgeon is saying. Both he and my pulmonologist believe that I have sleep apnea and that it's what will get me approved. I was just wondering if there's anyone who was in the same boat.

Yeah sounds like that is your case. I have a bmi of 41 with no cormibids so over 6 months I have only lost 6 pounds. I say if you dont have sleep apnea then get your BMI to 40 and start over!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
