2.5 weeks post-op.... Puree Stage

Recommended Posts

So I am now in the puree stage of my post-op eating regimen, but I am finding it incredibly difficult to eat anything. Now let me clarify that by saying the actual act of eating and keeping food down isn't what is hard... food still smells good and tastes good when I eat, but I just literally feel so grossed out while I am eating. I have been following my surgeons recommendations of not drinking 30 min before and after my meals, and I am taking tiny bites and making sure to spread it out over a good 20 minutes... but I just hate feeling like I am having to force myself to eat rather than enjoying that I get to eat. I am definitely not over eating my any means either and I never feel like I am satisfied after eating, but definitely too grossed out to eat a little more. I know it isn't too uncommon, but for any of ya'll who have experienced this or are feeling it now, how are you dealing? Will it get better soon? I'm just miserable and trying to get in all of the stuff my surgeon tells me too but it is feeling overwhelming and impossible.

I think we have to rethink what 'satisfaction' is. It's HARD. When I made my favorite creamy Tomato Soup a few days ago, I had to rethink old portions. It used to be a favorite comfort food--and I'd usually eat two bowls. I barely got in a saucer full, and I knew I was done. My old comfort food isn't a comfort anymore. I have to find satisfaction elsewhere. My satisfaction has to be in getting a job done, a errand finished or a sewing project done. I eat to keep my organs working. And ohhhh my goodness it's so hard to wrap my head around this sometimes.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
