Question about incision sites

Recommended Posts

*I realize my surgeon is the best source for medical info; I'm just curious about y'all*

Good day, all!

My SG was last Wednesday (12/21). It's been rough, but slowly improving. A question for you all:

What do your incision site feel like to the touch?

Mine were all the same until yesterday.... I'm worried that I've pushed myself too far around the house and developed a hernia.

Nothing is visible/protruding from the outside, but my main incision is "harder" than the rest, and of course more tender. IDK - I'm probably being a worry wart. Not working ATM and kinda bored, lol!

Thanks!

My surgeon warned me about hardness potentially at incision site. Said not to worry as it is part of healing. I never touched them.

scar tissue is harder than regular tissue, so unless there's other concerning symptoms, I'd not worry about it.

Totally normal, just scar tissue. Mine was like that and now completely flat and fine. If it is sore or oozing call your doctor. Lump is totally normal though. :)

I wouldn't worry. I was told that you would know if you were in more pain than normal, or if the incision sites were hot and swollen and weeping then to call. Plus you can definitely tell when you have over done yourself! I did it a few times after surgery. I don't like not being able to do things!

The hardness isn't so much the incision itself, but rather the tissue surrounding it and leading into my abdomen. The other ports don't feel this way.

I guess I'm just being overly anxious.

I have had 14 major surgeries in 2 years. All of my abdominal scars are hard first. (I now have 12!!) Takes them about 3 months before the scar tissue starts softening up. Usually by day 10 your incisions should be completely closed. Then you can start massaging them in small, circular motions. Per my breast reconstruction surgeon, I use aquaphore on them when I massage them.

I am so scared of popping something open, that I am being ultra careful about doing anything remotely strenuous. I am 25 days from surgery and still taking it easy. The chores will have to wait. This first couple of months is about giving my body the chance to heal properly. My incisions are healing well. Keeping them clean and protected.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
