Will I ever be able to swallow normal again?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 8 days ago. I had 3 days of the clear diet, followed by pureed foods for the last 5. I have about 3 more weeks of pureed foods to go. I accidentally ate a solid food once so far--I was offered a muffin and simply forgot my restrictions. It hurt terribly, but but after a few minutes of pain and choking it finally went away. I won't be making that mistake again. I know I have a long way to go before my solid food stage, but today, I can't even imagine being able to swallow solid food. Does it get easier? Does the opening ever get any bigger? Right now it feel like it's about as wide as a pencil. I really am committed to this and want to lose weight, but will I ever be able to eat a regular meal again?:help:

Right after surgery your stomach is so swollen it's the same as being VERY restricted.. as the swelling goes down, your stomach pretty much returns to "normal", and you get hungrier and can eat a lot more.. I didn't try any breads, but everything I did eat went down "normal" a few weeks after surgery - after a while i stopped being careful about chewing and bite sizes, and just ate how I ate before surgery.. I think it's the breads that are bound to give you problems... I can only speak from my experience of between surgery and my first fill (which i got today!). I'm not sure if breads being a problem is something that happens only when you're restricted or if it will happen all the time.. according to my nutritionist, doughy type breads kind of "ball up" and act like a plug in your stomach!

Wishing you a speedy recovery, hope that helped a bit.

You will...I was banded in April and I can eat anything...I just can't eat more than a half a cup...I eat slower and I chew really well.....and I have no problems eating at all...

Do you even eat breads? Is it true that you cannot drink and eat at the same time? What about when you are out to eat with friends or family. I take it there will be no sipping on wine during you meal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
