3years out with severe heartburn

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone just looking for a little input here, I am 3 years out from sleeve also 15 months post pregnancy. In the beginning after my sleeve I could get away with taking a Prilosec every few days then it became that I needed to take it every day. during my pregnancy I had awful heartburn and would even wake up choking on acid. now it has gotten even worse, I literally feel like the lining of my stomach is burning. I have burning pain in my shoulder like someone is putting a cigarette out on me also with chest pains . Sometimes the burning is so much that I feel like my body is about to burst into flames. I did contact my surgeon and he tried having me double up on Prilosec.which did not work. in fact nothing over the counter works, even If I have not eat anything for the day and still have the worst heartburn ever. does this sound like GERD or something else?

I am scheduled to have an egd with bravo study on January 13th.i have also asked the gastroenterologist if he could check the condition of my sleeve as I have not had any restriction since the 4th month during my pregnancy. I went from 257 to 150 in a year. during the pregnancy I got up to 192 and right now I am sitting on about 176. the only thing that seems to give my stomach a bit of relief is when I do eat so I find myself grazing a lot now. I am hoping for a revision.

I am not a doctor but I have experienced similar things. It was so horrendously bad that I have been admitted to hospital to run tests thinking it was something much worse than gerd. I take PPI's everyday now and try my absolute best to maintain an alkaline diet. Alkaline Water, absolutely no tomatoes anything no sausages, straightforward simple foods. Baked or boiled chicken, carrots, sometimes bananas. Bananas affect everyone differently sometimes it makes it better and sometimes worse. Try checking out what "lifestyle changes" u can make. I quote it because it sounds like Bullshit but for us it's real life. These things help me. Good luckkk.

I had severe complications my first year. Vomiting and nauseous 24/7 after i transitioned to a regular diet after the first 2 months. I had to beg for a second opinion. He refused to refer me to the doctor i requested. I saw his partner who diagnosed me with bile Reflux immediately after doing an upper endoscopy. How the original surgeon missed that is beyond me. I had every system listed. The dr moved 4 hours away so i transfered care to a gastroenterologist. My GI gave me a script for Dicyclomine 10mg as needed. As soon as i start feeling pain that feels like a knife in my stomach i take 1 capsule. Within 5 minutes i feel like a millon bucks! The medicine doesnt have any side effects. I dont get sleepy etc with it. The pain gets so bad i cant stand up straight. I also take Prilosec 20mg and amitriptyline 10mg. My first year i was in and out of the hospial and ER for dehydration and other issues. I went from 300 pounds down to 158. Have to admit it is pretty exciting going from a size 26-28 down to a 10-12 pant and small - medium tops. I bought J Jill and Talbot swing jackets in a size 6 and 8. I am pretty excited about all the different styles i can wear tody. Hope his helped!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
