Hiatal hernia-how common?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm new here and wanted to know if anyone else got WLS by having a hiatal hernia? I wake up in the middle of the night with heartburn and it burns badly when I burp. I hate to be hoping for one however I'm self pay and it would help tremendously. Anyone else in this situation? My EGD is scheduled for next Friday.

My surgeon has a reduced rate for sleeve surgery if they have a hiatal hernia. Insurance covers the hernia repair and most surgical costs.

I had one but didn't have acid reflux. Mine manifested more with making it difficult to eat or drink sometimes. I think they are common.

I had a moderate size hiatal hernia that was repaired when they did my WLS. I've met several people who had theirs discovered during WLS. IMHO it appears to be common.

My surgery was July 25th. I had two hernias and one was hiatal, the other ventral, plus the gall bladder. It was sore but i was at a wedding the following weekend from released-I had 5days instead of 4. The ventral was in front of the gallbladder. No pain from hiatal. Upside-I just stopped taking the dexilant. It works like omeprozal. No indigestion! Gastric sleeve and the other surgeries require commitment to changing how and what you eat forever. I had a piece of candy, a chocolate and I had a few Cookies a few drinks on Christmas, but no bread, little potatoes, less than a tablespoon. You cant tolerate liquid 30 mins before and 30 after a meal. You basically eat five little high Protein, low sugar meals a day and 48 oz of Water. The better you hold to that the better you lose and the better you feel. Liquor is 100% sugar. Once in a great while is okay. It's just wasted time and calories. I like being thin! I like no gallbladder and no heart burn or indigestion.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
