Laughkc11 107 Posted December 25, 2016 Day 3 post-op. I'd love to know how to get this disgusting taste out of my mouth. Post-op guide says no gum. It's weird because I'm not hungry, but I want to chew something just to get this awful taste out. I'm assuming my breath is pretty rank, too, although I haven't asked anyone to confirm that . I'm sure I'm not the only one. Anyone found a good solution for this?
nursemichelle7 14 Posted December 25, 2016 I'm guessing you've tried brushing your teeth already correct? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

tonyagetstiny 12 Posted December 25, 2016 I have the same thing going on also I was told it was Ketones caused by rapid weight loss. I just got some sugar free gum and it's helping but the taste in my mouth is awful! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

jtraub12 7 Posted December 26, 2016 Are you on Protein Shakes yet? I think I narrowed it down to that... the taste in my mouth was God awful in the morning! Ick! I've brushed my teeth and tongue way more than I usually do.. might be helping...
theantichick 2,204 Posted December 26, 2016 If you are consuming less than about 50g of carbs a day (most patients still on liquids post op are) you are likely in ketosis. The bad breath is a side effect, and there's not much to be done about it. Ketosis is the goal of low carb eating, so if your surgeon's eating plan calls for low carb, you'll get used to it. sent from mobile device
newmein2017 16 Posted December 27, 2016 I'm 6 days out and having the same issue. Plus my tongue has the white film layer on it that will NOT brush off. Driving me nuts!
simpsongrad 85 Posted December 27, 2016 I had that too (bad breath and white film). So gross! I actually brushed my mouth with peppermint essential oil and toothpaste. I did this several times and it helped a lot even though it did burn at the time! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
bossportsgal 136 Posted January 17, 2017 So glad I found this post. I have that gross taste too. I'm six days post op. And such a white tongue. I have mouth rinse that I use. And try to brush my teeth after each "meal" or Protein shake. Will it go away? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
hayleyf3706 150 Posted January 17, 2017 I had this as well! White film and everything. I just brushed a lot, used a dry mouth mouthwash, and stayed patient. It went away eventually! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Ssze1109 163 Posted January 17, 2017 Mine was from the Protein shakes. It was awful. I kept mouthwash and biotene with me. I also ate sf Popsicles which helped Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
wruiz 49 Posted January 18, 2017 I had the same thing... my son told me I smelled like mothballs! Lol..... but it does go away, just give it time!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
TXJess 98 Posted January 18, 2017 It's ketones. Means you are burning fat. It doesn't go away while you are in fat burning mode. My dr. Said sugar free hard candy was better than gum. Gum can cause gas. Anyway, lots of Water will help clear them too. Sent from my KFTBWI using the BariatricPal App
