For everyone that has had the surgery with Dr. Fitzer, how was the pain after you left the hospital. The reason I ask is because i read that some say that he does not send you home with medication. I'm not big on pain meds, but I do worry about how to handle the pain if it gets too intense. Thanks for all of your advice.

Hi everyone,

Im scheduled for surgery with Dr. Fitzer, I know im pulling up this thread from a while ago, but i was wondering if he required any one of you to do an endoscopy or sonogram before surgery? I am a self pay patient.

Did you go through with your surgery with Dr Fitzer as a self pay patient? Do you mind if I ask what your total payment was?

I know this thread is a bit old, but I thought I'd chime in and say that I have my initial consultation with Dr. Fitzer scheduled for next Friday. Would anyone like to share why they went with Fitzer instead of a larger practice such as Inova? Fitzer seems like an outstanding surgeon and the comments here indicate that his staff is fantastic. But I'm a bit concerned that he is a solo practice, and that he could pack up and go back to New York or elsewhere, leaving me to find follow-up care and support elsewhere. How did you weigh those concerns in your own decision-making?

I had to do 12 months with dietician and lose 10% of my weight. It’s went by quicker than I thought. My friend had surgery over a year ago and she has done awesome. She was the main reason I chose Dr Fitzer, but I have heard nothing but good things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
