I have not had the surgery yet, (mine on jan.) but I have a friend who did.

After 7 months, she went hiking for 3 days, it was alright. She took dehydrated banana, Protein Bars, nuts bars and lots of liquids!

No surgery jet so no suggestions from me - but I am so with you on this one. One of my goals is going back to the Camino and doing the next stage with less pain than the one I did this year. Surgery in January and hoping to do some serious hiking summer of 2017.

Hiking part of the Virginia section of the Appalachian trail with my dog is on my bucket list! So far I can only do day hikes. As soon as the snow is gone and I am down 24 more pounds I will start training for longer and with a weighted pack! I don't really have any tips to pass on because I am learning, just wanted to wish you many great adventures!

@@Christopher James - I don't know where you have been, but as for me, I've been to heights I've never imagined me doing (well maybe when I was 19 in the Army). The nice thing about hiking is you can nibble on nuts and things which would normally be a problem, but do really well when you are moving under a load constantly. Be very aware of your Water intake and enjoy the air, the views and new found mobility.
