Vitamin confusion....

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 week out and so far I've been using specialist Bariatric Vitamins that I'd bought prior to surgery. However, my surgeon suggested there was no need to have these and he recommended some for me. The Iron he recommends is 200mg ferrous sulphate, and the Calcium is the AdCal-D3, which is calcium carbonate.

Doing my own research I've read that calcium citrate is much better absorbed and there are more gentler iron supplements I could be taking that are also better absorbed. I just wondered what people's views were on this?

I agree with you as surgeons are not dietitians and giving nutritional counseling is out of their scope of practice. Calcium carbonate is not well absorbed regardless of if you have had surgery or not so I think you are on the right track in learning for yourself on this one. My NUT recommended Flintstones complete (purple bottle, chewable not gummies) and I still take them almost 4 years later. I also take calcium citrate and extra Vitamin D (was Vit D deficient well before surgery). My NUT now recommends a line of bariatric Vitamins but that's profit motivated, my surgeon's office sells them.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
