Shopping for surgery

Recommended Posts

I don't even start my very first appointment until the end of Jan 2017. Seems like so long from now. Has anyone shopped around for surgeons? I am going to where my doc referred but I know there has got to be more available and maybe can get in faster....or go with the referral? Or am I just too impatient?

It will be here before you know it. And if you take advantage of all the pre op education you will be far better off that if you get the immediate gratification of getting surgery right now and really, that desire to get what we want as soon as we want it is one of the biggest reasons we are fat in the first place. So..take this time to evaluate your behavior and start making changes that will improve your post surgery outcome and prepare you for a LIFETIME of thinking, behaving and eating differently.

Good luck!

Thank you for your kind words. I had to chuckle with the "take advantage of all the pre op education" only because besides actually having it done, I've been doing this (researching, learning) for almost two years now. Lol. I guess another month isn't too bad. Ha!

I don't think it hurts to shop around to find the right surgeon for you. Then you can compare programs and style. However, dont choose someone you dont like just to move timeline up. Also, find out your insurance requirements now so there are no surprises as you get started. I called my insurance company and they provided mine in writing.

So it's probably best to stick with the one I got referred to then. He's got great ratings too. I wasn't thinking ahead really. As much as I'd love to get in there and get the ball rolling, a great surgeon and team is probably better. I've already called my insurance company several months ago. The policy hasn't been revised since and I'm covered. I think I've even got all of my dietary requirements covered already too, so now, I just wait till the appt.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
