Anthem - Blue Access

Recommended Posts

I finally made up my mind to explore the lap band proceedure. I have an appt with my GP next week to discuss how to proceed and who he recommends as a surgeon. In doing some leg work for this I called my insurance company (Anthem). They said that NO bariatric surgery, regardless of the reason is covered. I am absolutly devistated. I can't afford this without help from my insurance company. Even with the maximum flexible spending allowance next year. I have a friend who had this done and she has been a wonderful resource, but she paid out of pocket for her surgery. So she isn't able to help me very much with insurance. I just need help trying to figure out what to do next. I have been looking around these boards and see things about first denial and legal rights. I'm just not sure how and if any of it applies to my situation. Any advice is SO appreciated. :think

I had an exclusion with my Anthem policy as well.

I'm sorry to tell you, I was informed by an attorney that I had little to no chance trying to appeal a denial. He advised me not to even spend the money on all the pre-op tests and legal fees.

I found a self pay insurance plan that ended up covering the band for me. (if you are in NY I might be able to help you)

You could also explore going to Mexico for about $7,000-$10,000 or there's a doctor in CO that does it for about $10,000

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
