How to deal with severe Gerd

Recommended Posts

Because my revision to bypass was denied I have deal with my hiatal hernia and my severe Gerd. My Gerd is so bad I'm on at least 4 to 5 different meds and I still wake up throwing up acid. My insurance won't cover anything and was told to treat medically. How do you deal with this? My hernia is ok, I can't breathe very wells and have chest pains but it's there. I knew something was wrong when I went to the gym and couldn't do the elliptical. But my dr told me to deal with it now and learn to maintain it. But how?

Have you tried to look for another doctor? Verify that this doctor is going to do anything for you. It sounds like you have the medical criteria for reversal and they just don't want to do the legwork. I'd get it in writing too, your problems, the medical research and why they are doing nothing.

Omeprazole is the only thing that has worked for me, a steady daily dose. I missed a weeks worth a month ago and my esophagus is still messed up from it

@@swimbikerun the dr I have is the only one bcbsil will cover that's near me. He has fought with my insurance since about May to have the revision but nothing. Bcbsil told him there is nothing more that he can do to fight it.

Have you talked to them? I will keep at them until I get someone signed off on it, legally. Get my drift?

@havetobestrong yes my gerd started literally right when I got off the table. I still have it but now I'm trying to maintain and learn what makes it worse.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
