One week post-op and I'm so hungry

Recommended Posts

I didn't think I was going to be so hungry. My surgeon requires two more weeks of a liquid diet before I can move on to mushy foods. The first few days were rough but I've been able to get all of my liquid and Protein for the past 3 days. But my hunger isn't any different than it was on the pre-op diet when I had a full stomach.

My greatest fear is that I go through all of this and eating a low calorie diet isn't any easier than it was before surgery.

It is a very normal phase. I promise. Same thing happened to me and a lot of people. I am 2 months out and went from being hungry everyday right after surgery to now I hardly ever get hungry. It will normalize.

@@DillThePill

Are you taking a PPI everyday?

Head hunger from not chewing is really real. Physical hunger, not so much unless you are having acid issues. Acid mimics hunger.

When you get to purees it pretty much goes away. I was told that, since chewing is such an important part of the digestive process, your body craves it.

As soon as I could eat purees, I felt better.

Thanks for the replies. It passed and I haven't been hungry in days, even consuming only 300 calories.

Funny, I'm on day 3 of post op and I keep wondering if something is wrong with my sleeve because I have a healthy appetite, no food aversions and no nausea. I was told it could take me 2 hours to drink an 8 oz shake but I got it down in less than 45 minutes. I'm hitting 8O G Protein without a struggle. Same goes for Water. I sip, sip, sip and have been getting my ounces in. Is my pouch not tight enough, or am I still adjusting?

Oh wow wish I could be like that I barely can get down 2 ounces and my doctor telling me to try getting 4 ounces of apple sauce at one time down that won't happen right now I sip but it takes me two hours to get down 30 grams of Protein

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
