Hi all! Gastroparesis patient.. considering bypass or sleeve. I was wondering if you all had bypass or the sleeve and what you felt was the most challenging? I have idiopathic gastroparesis and I think I'm fairly stable with occasional flares but also can't take reglan either due to side effects. I was told that having surgery could help "cure" my gastroparesis. Any insight is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

Hi there, every one reacts to the surgery different from what I can tell. The sleeve was not even an option for me die to the gastroparesis. I also had idiopathic gastroparesis and it was pretty bad. I felt sick pretty much all the time. My GI doctors tried pretty much everything on me except reglan because of the side effects. The meds helped calm things down but still felt sick often.

I was reallt nervous abt having surgery but so far I am doing really well. I have experienced some weird things like having the "foamies" after surgery...Pepcid helped with that but I know longer need any of my GP meds at all[emoji4].

Hope this helps....

Wow! Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear you're doing so much better! This is probably the best information I've read so seriously, thank you! My provider has been pushing toward the bypass but then I read some negative things (which essentially there will always be negative with any procedure so I'm not sure why I even dwell!) and it made me really anxious and nervous. I can read however many studies and get feedback from doctors but it's not the same as the peace of mind I get from someone who actually went through it! I'm so glad to hear it was a success and all worked out so well for you!!

You're so very welcome! Keep doing your research to make sure you're prepared. A lot changes after surgery like needing Vitamins, Calcium, etc to ensure good health. This wasn't a big deal for me since I already had to take them ever day. Though you will one day be able to eat things you probably couldn't eat before because of Gastroparesis you will have to learn a new way of eating and truly listening to your new tummy....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
