I have a few autoimmune diseases as well as gastroparesis. I was told before my surgery that I would get better if I proceeded. Since, I am unable to eat or drink anything without vomiting. I've now learned from one doctor that I should have NEVER had the surgery with my gastroparesis. Anyone else with gastroparesis? How are you able to manage your symptoms?

I have Gastroparesis as well and I just had my gastric bypass on 12/12. I did have some nausea for days, but it went away with me sipping more fluids slowly and taking my anti-nausea medication.

I was told that I was only able to get the bypass (which I wanted anyway) instead of the sleeve because of my Gastroparesis. I was told that the sleeve was in no way an option for me. And while there was some initial nausea, the bypass should eventually make my Gastroparesis symptoms go away.

How are you doing now? I'm scheduled for surgery at the end of this month. I have been researching trying to find others with gastroparesis and how the surgery affected them. Thanks!

I'm still having some nausea and I don't know if my occasional vomiting is due to my gastroparesis or not.

I'm now 10 weeks out and my vomiting has slowed down tremendously. I went from vomiting a few times a day to now just once every few days. Hope you are doing better now.

I'm 5 weeks out and I just has a check-up with my surgeon earlier today.

He has me on Reglan for two weeks to see how that works for me.

Wow...were you on medication for the gastroparesis before having surgery? This makes me a little nervous.

Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

No, my GI doctor didn't feel comfortable putting me on it.

Once I changed my diet, I was fine and didn't need the medication anyway.

Hey there...just a follow up. I had my surgery on 1/25. So far so good. I went from having gastroparesis symptoms everyday regardless of what I ate to not having any. I have maybe felt a little nauseous 2 of 3 times but no vomiting. My surgeon prescribed me reglan just in case (I had frothing the first week...yuck) but I have not had to use it. I take 1 pepcid at night every other day to ensure the frothing doesn't come back.

How have you been since our last chat?

Hi
As far as me, I have been a little better. I am only vomiting maybe once or twice a week now. I've been eating a lot of nuts lately which ironically has helped. I can still only eat about 2 tsp worth of food regardless of what it is. Unfortunately I'm allergic to Reglan and Erythromycin so other than Domperidone I dont have many rx choices. I have noticed that ginger gum seems to help also. I hope that you continue to recover well.

Wow. I'm so sorry to hear that you are still having challenges. Ginger used to help me alot. Ask about Amitryptilin. It helps for nausea and pain. I use to take 25mg each night. Eventually I was reduced to 15mgs.

My surgeon's nurse thinks that my vomiting has more to do with my Constipation and lack of bowel movements.

I think she may be right because I haven't had a BM all week and I got sick three times this week.

I'm working on taking stool softeners every day to help!

Hi all! Gastroparesis patient.. considering bypass or sleeve. I was wondering if you all had bypass or the sleeve and what you felt was the most challenging? I have idiopathic gastroparesis and I think I'm fairly stable with occasional flares but also can't take reglan either due to side effects. I was told that having surgery could help "cure" my gastroparesis. Any insight is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

Ask about a medicine called Linzess. It is very expensive though unless your insurance will pay for it. I had a lot of constipation with my gastroparesis so I was prescribed this before surgery. However, it works wonders!!!!!

If you can't get that, you can get Myrilax over the counter. It works pretty good too.

I pray you get relief soon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
