I went private. With the NHS I needed to do a years supported diet, then I would have had to wait a minimum of 3 years, THEN might have to wait longer if someone 'more deserving' came along. I have Hashiomotoes Thyroiditis (for 25 years +) Very high blood pressure, depression and was pre-diabetic.

Wish I had done it years ago!

Kate.

Hello. I've seen my gp today and they have suggested bariatric sleeve. How long does the process take on the nhs? Is it worth trying to go private?

Hiya I live in the UK too, Lancashire. I was first referred to weight management 4 years ago by the NHS. Then finally after 2 years I was referred to the bariatric dept and chose Salford Royal in Manchester. From the first appointment with them to surgery date it was 2 years. I had my surgery on 3rd December 2016 and gotta say the care I had on the NHS was excellent. My advice is to push your GP to refer you and if you fully comply with your specialist at your chosen hospital and show that you're ready for a new lifestyle they'll do your surgery

I consulted privately at Glasgow Nuffield at end of May 16 and had my surgery on 23 August. In between, initial diet to lose 5 kilos, Psychologist and Dietician assessments, then 2 week pre-op liver shrinkage diet. Follow up in place. No regrets.

I'm in Liverpool and I've been with the bariatrics team for a year I've done everything they have asked of me so they have rushed me through the whole process to the point that they called me at home yesterday to ask if I want the surgery in 2 weeks time!!! It may be different with different counties but mine has been fab!

Had mine done on NHS

Took 2 years from initial referral to having it done in October. It may take longer this way but there was loads of support.

Depends where you are in the UK as every PCT is different. Current date for surgery for me is 18th April and it's taken me 10 years to get this far. Glasgow/Scotland you have to do a long course before your considered for surgery and that's only if you don't lose more than 10lbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
