Just got sleeved 12/14/16. Discovered sleep apnea!

I just got sleeved on the 14th. Everything went by so fast I started my wls journey on Halloween day with my first visit! In Kansas we have poor health insurance options so they would not pay for anything. I had to self pay and be on the "fast track" program. Surgeon fees were $3420 including Assistant Surgeon. hospital fees was $9000 even. I did the psych evaluation and all labs self pay as well and ended up right around $1000.

Moving on. I did not expect to have my surgery so quick. I was thinking Late December to maybe January. After completing the labs and all required pre op visits. I got a call on December 1st that I need to start my liquid diet because I was scheduled December 14th for surgery! I was shocked and excited at the same time. I went from 353 to 336 from the pre op diet and bowel prep.

Now I knew I snored a lot even when I was active and healthy as a mailman back in the day. When I left that job to get into car sales, I've gained quite a bit of weight along with wife's pregnancy on our 2nd child. I ballooned up 100lbs in a year. The bigger I got the louder my snoring but luckily my family puts up with it.

Since I was self pay I never had to do a sleep study. I never was diagnosed with sleep apnea. They just told me after surgery I had a hard time waking up and I had to be on the cpap or breathing machine. I could not sleep whatsoever with that on. It beeped every time I fell asleep. I stayed in the hospital without really sleeping. It was horrible until a nurse let me sleep without it for a few hours. Anyone have sleep apnea and never knew they had it? It's more serious than I thought. I could have died during surgery.

I have sleep apnea and it's not easy getting used to the mask, but if you try EVERY night to fall asleep with it on (even if it only lasts a few minutes) eventually you will get used to it. But you have to try every night. Now I can not sleep without it!!

I have always snored but I've always felt I never had sleep apnoea. I don't remember ever having any of the symptoms. After I got sleeved (December 5), a machine at the PACU kept beeping anytime I fell asleep, and they thought I had sleep apnoea. I was put on CPAP, but the machine still beeped when I tried dozing off (which was a task as the machine tried its very best to force all the air in the grand canyon up my nose) :D . They took off the CPAP and concluded that perhaps I had residual respiratory depression from the general anaesthesia which my post op morphine doses were worsening. Got discharged to the ward after closely monitoring for 2 hrs.

I was sleeved on 11/22 and was never diagnosed with sleep apnea before surgery either but after surgery every time I fell asleep they would have to place the oxygen on me. Hoping this is something that will go away along with the pounds. I'm 3 1/2 weeks out of surgery and down 16lbs. Hw 239 Sw 234 CW 218

Hello :)

I found out that I had sleep apnea in 2015. I had colon-resection surgery and complications. Spent 2 months in the hospital, then when I got home, I had a letter waiting for me from the hospital. It explained that during the surgery, they expected that I had sleep apnea, and they suggested that I have a sleep study done. At that time, I weighed around 330 pounds. I didn't know anything about sleep apnea at that point.

I went and had my sleep study and found out that I had moderate sleep apnea. Now I sleep with a CPAP every night. I use the full face mask, that covers my nose and mouth. It only took me a couple of nights to get used to it. I have no problems sleeping with it now.

I read and also my surgeon told me, that after I lose some weight, it is possible that the sleep apnea will no longer be a problem. My high weight was 334. I am now down to 279. So after I lose a significant amount more, I will go back and do another sleep study, and see if I still need my CPAP.

. They had me on the cpap because they said I wasn't getting enough oxygen when I was dozing off. Worst time ever. Machine would beep and I stayed awake. Even when they just put the oxygen tube in my nose, when I dozed off it started beeping too. I finally got some rest when they took all those off.

I, too, had my surgery on December 14th! Things have gone really well, although I am quite sore where the incision sites are. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea several years ago, and do wear a full face mask. I am very claustrophobic, and wasn't sure I could do it! But it has been fine. It can be very serious, so follow up on this!! Best of luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
