Pre-op coffee question

Recommended Posts

Pre-op and post-op I have 3 shots of Decaf espresso over ice with a vanilla Protein shake added. It's like an iced latte except it has 30 grams of Protein.< /p>

If I want hot coffee I just add a bit of my shake to hot coffee. My favorite flavors to use for Creamer or milk in my latte are Premier Protein caramel or vanilla.

Seriously, it's my morning addiction.

I'm trying to cut my caffeine now before my pre-op diet and I put Decaf coffee over ice with a scoop of vanilla Protein. It's so so. I haven't gone everyday with it just yet. Keep telling myself to stop buying regular coffee. Just so hard when Chameleon makes some AWESOME cold brew coffees!!! I will for sure abide by the rules when the time comes though and suffer my headaches for a few days if I have to.

I have a large cup of coffee every morning, and hearing that I would have to give up coffee for a while was more disturbing to me than giving up most everything else. I had to have kidney surgery a couple years ago, and had to do Clear liquids the day before, so the caffeine withdrawal headache hit me postoperatively. The headache was worse than my post op pain, nothing made it stop until I was finally able to have some coffee. That was a rough time.

I make my coffee with a keurig in the morning, and my one cup holds two servings, so I started using one regular and one Decaf k-cup. Currently, I'm brewing the regular first and pouring out a bit before brewing the decaf, and I will continue to decrease the regular until I'm using all decaf. I don't want to face that headache again!

For anyone who uses a keurig I have found "Gorilla Decaf" by the Organic Coffee Company (Amazon) has a nice bold flavor, it's better than any other decaf I've tried. It might come in Beans or grounds too, but I have never looked.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
