Hello. First post here. I'm one month away from my scheduled surgery and getting nervous. I just told my teenagers that I'm scheduled for surgery and they don't want me to have it. They want me to lose the weight the "right" way w diet and exercise. I am 75 lbs overweight and now this has cast doubt on my plans. I'm still planning, but want to see if anyone else has feedback on this....I'm single mom w diabetes, and high cholesterol and want to be healthier. They are worried I won't be able to change my habits after surgery and will gain weight back anyways.Ugh.

Do they want you around when they get married and have children? Explain to them that diabetes you could lose a limb or eye sight.. With cholesterol a heart attack. Knee replacement due to excessive weight. You will move better.

If they live with you, have them make sure only healthy foods are in the house.

I am 61 years old and have had complete knee replacements on both knees. I have arthritis in my right foot. My right hip is starting to bother me. This is why I am going to have this surgery. Also I have the same as you. Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high Triglycerides.

Let them know you want to be around longer and healthier.

This a decision is yours.

You know, I've struggled with whether or not to do this, too. But if I could have lost this weight the so-called "right way", I wouldn't be here. There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of this tool to help yourself.

Thanks. I agree and have had my mind set, and just didn't expect the response from my kids. They are worried too that something could happen during surgery. I chose the sleeve instead of bypass as I believe this is best. Anyone want to comment on why they chose sleeve over bypass? Ty to all. My nerves are settling.

I am also about a month away from surgery. I prepaid and got my plane tickets early. I didn't want to get cold feet. I am excited but also very nervous about the work I know I need to do concerning my relationship with food. I think it will be a hard transition but i am determined to be successful. I want to be healthy and have less pain.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
