anyone not recognize you after weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery on Monday and have been thinking a lot about life after surgery. One question that came to mind...

Have you ran into anyone post weight loss that did not recognize you. Like didn't know who you were? Or do people still look like themselves -100lbs?

To me I think I still look mostly the same but I have had coworkers that hadn't seen me in months say they didn't recognize me. Oh and the best one was I had to go into my sons school one day and while waiting my turn in the office the secretary thought I was my 18 year old daughter. [emoji4]

I've had several old patients not recognize me. I've had caregivers look at me and take 5-10 seconds to realize. The one that I'm kind of excited to see his response is my regional manager. If he comes around in another couple of months I truly don't think that he will recognize me.

Unfortunately no... Maybe fortunately too because the people in my life never really focused on my weight. The only one who focused on it was my mom and every phone call she still asks how is my weight lol. It's been seven years since I was near 300 lbs so it's been awhile so most people (co workers... Etc), other than family, met me when I was already ~160 lbs.

I was sleeved on 09/19 & was 253 pre-surgery weight & just hit 198. Most recognize me but take longer look. I work in office & several have said wow I saw you walk by & had to take double look to figure out who it was cause they still remember when I was heavier. Best is people I see at church cause they only see me once a week & tell me how good looking. It is very nice & encouraging. Best part I think honestly is how I feel -just everything seems to have gotten easier with the weight loss. I love walking now & remember the days I had to push myself just from daily body aches from all the extra weight alone. I hardly have any pain now.

My son!

I've showed him pictures of me thinner. I asked him who that is and he said "I don't know".

I kind of had the opposite reaction - one of my uncles, who hadn't seen me in a couple of years, did a double take when he saw how big I had become - it was then that I realised I was no longer overweight, but definitely obese, and pushing the edge of morbid obesity. Of course I've gained a lot of weight since then. However, like everyone else here, I'm hoping that I'll have some positive reactions to weight loss after the surgery.

My mom hadn't seen me in months. We were meeting at my daughter's dance recital. I dropped my wife off at the door, and parked the car. She was standing there talking to my mom who said asked her where I was as I was coming down the hallway. After telling my mom several times that I was headed their way, she had to literally point me out. My mom actually got misty eyed when she figured out it was me. And my mother is NOT an emotional woman.

Other than that it is usually a delayed recognition. I might meet an old colleague for coffee or for lunch. When I see them, they do not recognize me. Then when I start talking you see this flicker of recognition in their eyes as they realize it's you. Then they usually just stare for a minute or two. It's shocking to them. But I've lost 180+ lbs. that's a lot to take in if you haven't seen me in awhile.

Yeah. I wave like a crazy woman at some of my co workers that work in a different building when I see them and get back strange looks.. the kind you get when someone doesn't know why you are greeting them. It used to hurt until I realized that they probably don't recognize me.

At my family Dr's office. I've know the lab tech years. He came out to the lobby and looked around. Then called out my name. I stood up. He was shocked.

I have changed careers. I have walked past old co workers and supervisors on the street. They have no clue its me. I don't feel the need to let them know its me. lol ;)

People have seen my husband out with another woman...That other woman happened to be me...lol

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
