Surprised about vitamin levels

Recommended Posts

I recently went in for blood work in preparation for my 6 month post GB appt. The results came back normal except my Vitamin D and B12 values are very high - higher than the recommended levels. This surprises me because I thought after a gastric bypass I would have trouble absorbing. I have been on Vitamin D supplements for years and have always had a lower than normal level. I have never taken a B12 supplement but do take my bariatric Multivitamin. I had a note to stop taking the vitamin D immediately. Is this normal?

Do you do B12 shots? I just had the same bloodwork done in preparation for my six month visit too, and my B12 was too high. But I had just gotten my monthly B12 shot that morning.

No, I have never had a shot or B12 supplement (other than what is in my multivitamin).

Vitamin D is stored in fat, I think the levels go up when you loose weight. You should stop taking it as it as high vit D levels can cause hypecalcimia. Vit B12 fluctuates quickly don't take it for 24 hours before your recheck.

Low Vitamin D is epidemic in the NW especially from the beginning of October to the end of September.

I had to be on prescription mega doses twice in the past five years even though I take 100mg a day with 500mg of Calcium. Mine was lowish in partial when I had my first bariatric labs and pre op but normal now.

At my first 6 months check up my B12 was too high but not too high to take me off. then at 12 months post op it was so high that they took me off for 6 months.

B1 however was low which can be a problem so I started taking a B1 Vitamin in place of my B12.

I think it takes time to regulate during weight loss.

I've heard a lot of people mention high B12. I don't think it's dangerous, though. When mine got up above 2000, the PA at my surgeon's office had me do half doses. I think mostly because it was a waste of money taking them when it was already sky high. Usually high B12 isn't a problem, though. There are some people on another forum I'm on who like it when theirs is 1000 or higher because they claim they feel better. Mine has always been above 1000 (or at least since I started testing), so I have no clue how I would feel if it were less than that.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to keep taking my bariatric Vitamin until told otherwise. It will be interesting to hear what they say at my next appt. I don't eat seafood or soy but have been having more red meat since surgery.

Can I ask you what you learned about having low Vitamin B1? I just got my test result for B1 this week and mine is very low! I do not see my surgeon for a month but wanted to reach out in the forum. Thanks for any information =)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
