Starting my pre-op 7 day diet

Recommended Posts

Hi

From what I read and the surgeon has told me as well as nutritionist, eating high Protein food and good healthy vegetables will keep you feeling fuller than eating unhealthy foods or fatty foods. Also drinking Water is important. I was told by the surgeon to eat more freguenf meals and drink in between to make sure having enough protein.

Any advise ? Do's and dont's? How to handle hunger ?

It depends on what you are allowed to eat or if you're full liquid. Mine was full liquid and day 4 was a day of intense cravings. The rest of the ten days were much more manageable. Once you hit day 3 or 4, it should get easier. :)

We must be having surgery close to the same time!! I am finishing up day 3 of the full liquid diet. My first 2 days sucked a whole lot. :) But I just kept reminding myself that I CHOSE this. :)

After only 3 days of the liquid diet, I am really no one to give you my opinion, but I will say....today I added skim milk. For the first two days, it was Protein drinks and hot tea and V8 and grapefruit juice. I was just hungry for 48 hours straight. But today, I was less hungry. And then when I cut my Meal Replacement drink with skim milk, I felt so much more satisfied!! Then I had cream of potato Soup for dinner (with skim milk) and I feel great!

Good luck with your seven days!!! :) :)

Try not to do things that remind you of food (watching tv particularly cooking shows etc). You might find it easier if you drink your liquids away from the place you normally eat and keep away from others who are eating. If you are able perhaps take a walk .. or do something that keeps your mind and hands busy. I played a lot of computer games during my pre op liquid diet which was 4 weeks long. Basically the more you can do that is not part of your normal routine the easier it will be since for most over weight people food is intensely involved with normal routine.

Good luck with the surgery and focus on the new life you are about to begin, rather than what you are leaving behind.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
