My surgery date is 12/19 and had a "just curious" question. Had anyone cheated on their Pre-op diet and what did you cheat with?

No, I chose not to self-sabotage during pre-op. Or post op for that matter!

IMO cheating is a fine word for card games, but I think of "cheating" as doing something illicit that gives you an advantage . . . there is nothing seriously advantageous about choosing to disregard the pre-op instructions from your medical team.

I actually cheated the night before my surgery. It was a complete accident. It wasn't a major issue, though. I was told to be on a strict liquid diet for 6 days, and a clear liquid diet on the 7th day. I did so well on my liquid diet, and barely felt any major hunger. Well, on the 7th night, I somehow forgot that I was supposed to be on strictly clear liquid for the whole day right before my surgery; I poured myself a glass of Lactaid with sugar free chocolate Syrup. I panicked, but my surgeon said it was ok. My surgery was very successful.

So technically, yes, I cheated. It was truly an accident (I blame how exhausted I was and having my mind on so many things). But I didn't eat anything solid for the whole week before my surgery date.

There is no such thing as a "cheat". You can make good CHOICES or bad CHOICES. Take cheat out of your vocabulary unless you are the banker in Monopoly.

I chose to stay on plan pre op and post. I was a martial arts instructor so I did exercise a lot pre-op, so I did ask my doctor for additional fuel. He allowed me unlimited veggies and one more lean Protein per day.

Good luck to you!

But the banker wears a cool hat and a mustache.

You risk going open versus laproscopy if you don't follow the pre-op diet from your doctor. I don't know about you, but the thought of a bigger surgery, bigger scar, longer hospital stay and recovery, more money spent, were enough to keep me on the straight and narrow. Plus, I want(ed) to be successful and that won't happen if I give in to short term thinking/actions.

Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

My Mexican surgeon's NUT told me I needed to start my pre-op diet "as soon as possible" when I was still months out from surgery. She also said I should never eat Peanut Butter again because it has too much fat so I decided to never speak to her again. I decided a month should be long enough for a pre-op diet. A week into I had a really bad blood sugar crash out of town so my friends (who didn't know I was having surgery) took me out to eat and I had some pad thai. That was the only time. After that I stuck with it and I had to do 3 days of Clear liquids only. That is really hard to do while traveling to Mexico...but I made it!

I know it feels like forever but test that willpower and put that self-control to the test. You're going to need it if you're going to be successful. You've got this!

There were a couple of times -both while on the phone - when I was making my kids dinner and popped something in my mouth without even thinking. Totally out of habit and being distracted.

If you cannot manage the pre-op diet, and knowlingly sabatage it, you're going to have a hard time post op.

I keep hearing this, and I disagree. I mean, it's different for everyone to start with. For me, the pre-op was 100 times worse than anything has been post-op. Post-op, I don't have the hunger and cravings that I had pre-op. Even when I have an old voice in my head saying "eat the Little Debbies, they taste soooo good" I can clearly tell that it's an old tape in my head, and the part of my brain that actually imagines eating them says "actually, that doesn't sound good at all". I used to not be able to tell physical cravings from emotional cravings, and now I can. My pre-op plan was incredibly lenient compared to some I've heard - I was asked to drink 2-3 Protein shakes a day and have a "healthy" meal with no particular requirements to limit carbs or even count calories, just to try to keep to lean Protein and limit simple carbs. I had seven kinds of hell just doing that for 2 weeks before surgery. It was serious white knuckling, and I wasn't perfect. Post-op, I have no problems walking away from just about anything. I know that's not been everyone's experience, but it's certainly been mine.

I only cheated with coffee, and one day ate the noodles in my broth. My dr said my liver was just fine. I was hungry so I ate the noodles.

@KristenVSG2014

"I'm a banker. I'm offended "

At least you aren't a lawyer (don't flame me folks, I am setting myself up to tell a joke)

Two men are sitting on a bench. One of them was reading a newspaper on how a lawyer successfully sued a destitute woman who had 5 children. He jumped up and yelled "LAWYERS ARE A$$HOLES" (actually he didn't say, "A-dollar sign-dollar sign-holes", but BP will censor the word).

The other man jumped up and said "HEY, I AM OFFENDED BY THAT REMARK"

The first man said "Why, are you a lawyer".

The other man said "No, I'm an A$$HOLE_.

It could be worse, this joke could have involved "bugle" Snacks. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
