Can't find any exercise I like!

Recommended Posts

Hi, all!

I had my surgery may 2016 and am doing great!(sw 347 cw 265) However, I am still struggling trying to find a form of exercise that I actually like! In the summer I I lean towards Water sports (swimming, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding,) but those are not easily accessible all the time! I am trying to find a "normal," accessible exercise routine that I actually like! I have tried YOGA and Jogging and many youtube videos, but I'm still struggling! Could I just not be using the right tools/videos? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Go to a gym and talk to a trainer. You need a YMCA type of gym, or a rec center that has a full compliment of items. I belong to one, have a 'temp' membership at another, and have no problem with swimming or the like year around.

I'm afraid I will run into this problem as well. I can not afford a gym and will be relying on YouTube.

Do you like dancing? I used to bellydance and loved it, and there are some great bellydance workout videos. Think outside the box... are there any sports you like? Keep trying different things. If you have Amazon Prime, there are a lot of exercise videos you can stream included.

the YMCA should have a pool, so you can swim year 'round. They'll probably have other water-based exercises as well. I love Water aerobics and especially Aqua Zumba!

Since you like certain outdoor activites, when not look into exercises that compliment or supplement those activities? If kayaking is something you like and want to get better at, what physical attributes improve that performance? Weighted rows, lat pulls, cardio conditioning... Maybe the key for you is to find a goal not associated with a weight but at improving performance?

My kids both go to Tae Kwon Do, so when I was looking into exercise, they let me join the class for only $25 a month--that's 16 hour-long sessions. It was worth it for them to keep my kids in. It's so much fun! Can you make a deal with someone?

Winter can be challenging to find motivation.

Read exercise/health and fitness websites. They give me motivation and ideas of things to try. Here are a few.

If you can't afford a gym a few things to try:

Walking the mall or a museum.

A set of free weights or resistance bands.. Look up weight lifting routines to enhance your sport ( @@BigViffer suggested)

A few videos to try just for fun. You may be surprised on how you can get your heart rate up from a chair. Love her she is so positive.

some days I think everyone finds it a challenge to get in exercise, that is just when you have to push yourself to do it. Once it becomes a habit things are much easier.

for now I am focusing on walking. I am doing a minimum of 10000 steps every day, no exceptions. plus I can do that while doing activities i enjoy like shopping or window shopping. my early christmas present was a treadmill so I can do it while watching the walking dead. Plus we just got a tread desk at work so now i do it while on conference calls etc.

Prior to surgery, I had a trainer and I ended up really loving powerlifting. Lifting weights was really fun for me. I also did mma style fighting with jui jitsu. I plan on going back to that once I've healed more.

Cardio kickboxing and boxing is also really fun.

I'd suggest getting a trainer that makes your workouts fun and to achieve small goals along the way.

I want to look into hula hooping. The movements look a lot like belly dancing which is awesome for both exercise and confidence!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
