Nerve Pain in the Thigh - Ideas Please

Recommended Posts

I am EXTATIC with my WLS Surgery decision, and I have had no real complications to speak of. Recently, however, I have developed a nerve pain (sort of a burning, numbing pain) in the quadriceps and hip area of my left thigh. It is localized, and never goes to or past my knee. Additionally, my right leg is just fine.

I had the well-known numbness that many with morbid obesity learn to adapt to, and it disappeared after I lost my first 35-40 pounds. This seems to be a different pain in that it doesn't ever truly go away. Standing does intensify it, but walking is less of a discomfort. Sitting for 2-5 minutes is like a "reset button" that allows me to continue with normal activities. I found reference to Meralgia Paraesthetica online, but this forum has become a vital resource as well. Any similar experiences and/or solutions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

BigDogBryan

It kind of sounds like what I've been feeling, even before surgery. Exactly like how you put it, esp the reset part. But for me, I was diagnosed with degenorative osteoarthritis...I had to ask my doctor to request an xray, to see if that's what it was and turned out it was. Might want to maybe check on that, if it's not, good to rule it out! Good luck to you!

Another possibility is herneated disk in your lumbar spine. This can press on the nerve that affects that part of the leg.

I had this a year and a half ago. The nerve pain was much worse at night.

I have the same peoblem for 2 years now. As per Jhawaiianhny, its caused by degenerative osteoarthritis in the spine. Losing weight should lessen the pain, but the damage is done. I find going to a chiropractor helps to relieve the pressure where the nerve is being pinched.

FYI - went to the Chiropractor and found that there is a serious impingement on the left side in my lower spine, requiring treatment and adjustments. The good news is that it will be treated successfully.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, encouragement and help.

Bryan

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
