GERD and SIPS

Recommended Posts

So I've been reading on the forum and have saw that the sleeve procedure can make GERD worse and bypass cures it. However, doesn't seem like there's many switch people, so I was wondering if SIPS makes GERD worse or does it clear it?

I know DS (the switch) uses a sleeved stomach, so yes, that could potentially make GERD worse (just like the sleeve can). I'm not sure about SIPS. If they use a sleeved stomach for that, too, then yes - there's that risk.

I just recently got SIPS a few weeks ago and my heartburn has been pretty bad. I've heard different things about it, my dr says it should calm down pretty drastically after 60-90 days. But I've also read other things that it can be pretty long term/permanent. But I also tested positive for H Pylori bacteria so now I'm on antibiotics for that. Hoping that helps it.

Did your doctor give you an antacid as well? I know my doctor said it's common for all wls patients to have heartburn so they put all of theirs on antacids for the first 60 days

I was on nexium, but it didn't touch it after surgery, so they prescribed me dexilant and it still wasn't really helping. So now I'm on 2 antibiotics, another PPI (don't remember the name) to treat the heartburn and possible ulcer, plus extra strength zantac, all twice a day. I've only been on it for about a day and a half, so I can't give a whole lot of feedback yet on if it's helping. I've also found that getting my stomach adjusted by my chiropractor helps also.

I had the SIPS Sept 6 2016 and have had absolutely no issues with acid reflux, heartburn or gerd.

Oh good that's great to hear. I've had a little bit of heartburn, but I just found out I have a hernia, so they think that's what it's from and that it should get better.

It won't help it in any way. So if it was a problem before, it will most likely remain. I never had GERD before my sleeve. Had minor GERD after it, just had SIPS 12/16/16 and it did not improve any.

Were you put on any antacid during your first month? My surgeon puts all his patients on it because he said it's common for wls patients to experience some acid reflux

Yes Jane, Have a had a PPI since my sleeve. I just try not to take it very often as long term use of PPI's are not good for you at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
