If we are all getting the same surgery...bypass, why are different Vitamins suggested by surgeons. For instance my surgeon specifically told me no Flintstones chewables or Centrum. IDK I'm just thinking we all need the same amount of vitamins after surgery... correct? I feel like I have to purchase the more costly ones from particular websites until I can swallow actual pills. At least that's how I feel about my Multivitamin. I know I can grab the others at any drugstore. Am I missing something?

There are many different types of surgery. Even within gastric bypass surgery, you find the most common surgery is RNY (Roux-en-Y) gastric bypass but in other countries such as Mexico, they specialize in mini-gastric bypass, which is a different type of surgery. Sometimes Vertical Banded Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve surgery, and Doudenal Switch surgery are also included under this heading. So depending on the type of surgery, different Vitamin requirements exist.

I had RNY gastric bypass and my surgeon directed me to not take Gummy Vitamins nor time released Vitamins. This is because they are not absorbed properly. Most vitamins have a coating to protect the Vitamin during its journey through our system. This coating is engineered for the passage though our stomach and its strong acid environment and then to then pass into our intestines where the vitamins are released. But when our stomach is altered, these vitamins coatings do not dissolve properly and therefore may pass through our system without releasing its interior vitamin content.

Does your surgeon only recommend one particular brand? I'd be a bit concerned about that.

I do the Flintstones too, and was told to avoid gummies and any liquid or chewable Calcium citrate is fine.

Not a particularly brand, no. Specifically says no Flintstones, Centrum or gummies ( forgot to add those) Highly recommends Celebrate and Bariatric Advance. I'd like to find one a little more affordable. I do however have a print out of the recommended daily values....at the risk if sounding foolish what does 200% of daily value mean for your Multivitamin?

My NP said the expensive bariatric Vitamins are a waste of money. She likes Centrum chewables, and that's what I take- -two a day. But she says take whatever you can best tolerate. The best plan is one you'll stick with. I get my D3, Calcium, and B12 from costco. I spend about $10 a month on Vitamins.

I just got my labs back yesterday, and all my numbers are great.

$10 is totally doable. I like the Centrum brand. What brands do you get from costco? Are your B12 sublingual?

Where do you find the Centrum chewables? I've been starting to look at my local stores, I couldn't find any chewables. I can find the calcium chews and B12 easily.

My Dr doesn't recommend any brand but they said no gummies and no flintstones due to sugar content.

They're at Walmart. If you can't find them on the shelves, you can order them ship to store.

My doctor prescribed mine...but I showed him my patches...he seemed fine with those. The proof is in the pudding. First blood test was all good. We'll see how the others are.

I think I'm going to try the Patches. At least until I am on my soft food phase. Vitamins in general make me very sick if I don't eat with them. Where did you find the patches at?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
