Frustrated, depressed, confused 5 1/2 weeks post op

Recommended Posts

I am going to give you all the facts. Pre-op I was consuming avg 1300 calories a day in June, which each month went down a bit and about Sept I was at 1000 calories per day. October 800 to 900 per day. From August to surgery day (11-3) I lost about 50 lbs, and since surgery about 7 lbs. I have been in a stall since week 2! My calories avg 500-600 right now. Getting all my Water in (100 oz), most days all my Protein. Not eating "sliders". I am cleared to eat anything but raw veggies and steak. I am exercising several times a week, treadmill and weight machine.

I am exhausted. I throw up food daily. I cannot tolerate beef (ground), or any type of fish. I am going from zero shakes a day to having them be my main source of food again. I'm not hungry, which is great. I cannot handle all the vomiting while not losing weight either! Tonight it was tuna salad. Just a couple of bites. It came back up. I am separating the drinking and eating. I chew till it's watery mush. I avoid dry foods. I throw up water, yogurt, and cottage cheese, not just solids. I don't over eat. Some times even the first swallow of water feels stuck, especially right when I wake up.

Yes, I take my Vitamins. Yes, I called the doctor. (No return call) I even emailed. No response from that either. I went into urgent care last week. She ran liver tests (?) and said check in with Bariatric. Bariatric doesn't return calls. I have a telephone appt with the nutritionist Thursday.

I wouldn't feel so miserable about being miserable if I was at least losing. We are heading to Disneyland next week and I am worrying about being able to keep up with my teens.

Any idea what I can do to help the weight start coming off? As for my other issues, I feel it may be a stricture. I'll call the Doc again.

Thanks for listening.

Julie

You do not need to rush into the transition to solid foods. According to my surgeon's guidelines, I was not approved to transition to solid foods until week 9 after my RNY gastric bypass surgery. It is a hard transition.

I tend to agree with you that something is wrong. If you are vomiting up Water, that is not a good sign. The two main culprits are stricture or ulcer.

My surgeon recommend that I take the proton-pump inhibitor Omeprazole (Prilosec) for the first year after surgery. This was to help the stomach to properly heal. So if you are not already taking this, you might speak to your surgeon about this need.

Thanks James. I appreciate the advice. I think I will back off the solids. And I will ask about the Prilosec at my telephone appt.

My surgeon said the sooner the solids the better, but he also said mashed potatoes are a good option and I don't listen about that part. ????

Prilosec will be your best friend. Most foods have a lot of acid and after surgery your stomach is so small. AVOID FISH AND meats. I had the same problem with mine. To this day I am 11 months out and still have trouble with meats and fish. just make sure you drink enough as dehydration is very easy now.

Best of luck.

Thanks Ashley. I got a call back today, finally. Going in to see the surgeon in a week and the nurse's advice was to go back to very soft foods in the meantime. And I will be adding Prilosec!

Eh, ok. Back to liquids with a little cottage cheese, yogurt, and refried Beans added in. Haven't thrown up in a couple of days! I see the surgeon Tuesday, but the barium swallow test isn't till the week after. I actually feel better. Throwing up takes alot of energy! Thanks for asking!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
