Hashimoto's hypothyroidism which surgery is best

Recommended Posts

I'm getting surgery done on February 1, 2017. I have been trying to find some answers to which surgery is best for people that have Hashimoto's disease hypothyroidism. Does anybody have any input suggestions or experience?

I have Hashimoto and I'm having the sleeve on January 19th. My doctor hasn't expressed any concern. I lost nearly 100lbs 5 years ago through exercise and tracking, my TSH was actually 24 at the tine of losing which was higher than when I was originally diagnosed at 20 with like 1600 something antibodies. Now I have been losing some (around 30lb). It has taken much longer than last time I lost. I am older and also now have PCOS which I honestly feel affects my weight more than thyroid actually did.

I have hypothyroidism and PCOS and did great with the sleeve and plenty on here have done great with bypass. I think conditions like GERD and severe diabetes and how much you need to loose will help decide what is the best surgery for you. Both surgeries will help you loose weight with PCOS and hypothyroidism.

I have both conditions, and had the sleeve done 5 months ago. I don't recall it being a factor at all in the decision between the two surgeries. Good luck!

make it a great day

I have it too and recently had revision from LapBand to sleeve and it didn't impact either one. My dr. had to reduce my dosage on Synthroid recently but that's it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
