Pre Op Liquid Nausea?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I've been on my pre-op liquid diet since 12/6 and been getting some killer nausea. I almost had to get off the bus to work to hork. :/

It's highly unpleasant! Discover anyone else experience this during their pre-op diet? And does anyone have any suggestions?

For reference, my pre-op diet allows no solid food whatsoever. A typical day is coffee w/protein powder, a sugar free Jello, soy milk w/protein powder, broth, then some Protein sugar free jello.

I just started by pre-surgery liquid diet today so I'm curious to see what others say.

Also: For any veterans out there: my nutritionis said that post-surgery, I need to have 1 scoop of Protein powder in 4 oz of liquid. How is that even possible? Is that even enough liquid to mix it properly? Tips? Thanks

@wonderwomanNJ

4 oz and 1 scoop i would suggest you get a blender if you don't have one. I had a Protein shake where it said on the container was 5 oz of Water and one scoop it was a little thick so I added just a little bit of Water

I got a better Protein Shake where it says 8 oz of water and a scoop.

In the morning I make 12 oz I know when I have surgery I won't be able to have it

Also get creative with it

Being I know I can't have an actual banana spit I made my own in a shake form.

I had some strawberry and graham cracker Protein Shake I took a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa

Half of a banana

A teaspoon of vanilla

It was so good

When I have chocolate Protein Powder I had a "Reese's Peanut Butter cup" with Peanut Butter powder

OMG awesome

The reason for the minimal liquid with one scoop of Protein is because it is EXTREMELY difficult to get enough protein in. Our stomachs no longer allow for the same amount of "food" (protein powder), so packing as much protein into as little of liquid as possible is important. You'll find that even 4 ounces is hard to drink after surgery.

coffee is not decaf, but I am allowed caffeinated drinks. I have drunk caffeine on an empty stomach before w/o problem, too.

Oh okay. That's what I was going to suggest. For me, I cannot do caffeine on an empty stomach. If it's never been an issue for you, that probably isn't it. It could be the different balance between protein and carbs (having essentially no carbs with high protein) then what you're used to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
