Depression and Anxiety Meds

Recommended Posts

Well I was told the same thing about XL drugs too. I had a rnygb Nov 30th and it was a concern but I swallowed them post surgery in front of the PA and she was pretty amazed and they've lost none of their effectiveness! I take a very small dose of MS Contin for chronic pain which I am happy to report is going away just by virtue of weight loss!!! I'm cutting down on others as well like Lyrica and I'm finding I can live without the pain meds. Depression and anxiety is another story though! I still require those

I don't expect to ever not need the psych meds. In fact my nurse practitioner told me that morbidity and mortality rates among people who have lost their weight are higher due to no longer having the coping mechanism of eating the foods that brought them temporary relief. I do hope to eventually not need any med for reflux. I've already gone from Prilosec 40mg twice daily to only once daily Protonix after surgery.

I thought my surgeon and hospital were going to send me home on my psych meds. They clearly said they would do all of this. They didn't. I got pills for Prevacid. Capsules I can't swallow. I got pain pills I can barely swallow. I tried swallowing my psych meds the first day but impossible without panic. So I called my regular psychiatrist for liquid meds. Took him 2 days to call back. Finally said he could get 1 of 2 in liquid. I thought fine. Found out from pharmacy that they can't understand his orders and it can't be filled til Monday. Meanwhile off of Ambien, trazadone, Wellbutrin and Zoloft all 4 cold turkey for last 6 days due to screw up.

So sorry to hear that. Your team has done you a disservice. I wonder why swallowing pills is hard for some? I was told no more than 3. My duloxetine is one of them and is a capsule and I have no issues. I don't see how the ability to swallow pills is affected other than fewer at a time so as not to have too many in your pouch. Did you also have a hiatal hernia repair or another procedure that would affect ability to swallow?

I hope someone has been in the same situation I am in and can set my mind at ease.

I take Wellbutrin XL and Effexor XR. My surgeon told me to contact my psychiatrist and tell him about my surgery so that he can change my meds. Mainly get me off of the extended release because they can't be crushed. I was also told to ask about liquid meds. I can't imagine being without my medications. Let's just say that I'm not a pleasant person to be around if I miss taking doses for more than two days. I really don't want to go back there mentally. Anyone else with this kind of situation? Were you able to take your meds while on the clear liquid phase? Were you eventually able to take pills again?

I also take psych meds and there is no way I'd either change or get off them. I've had no problem swallowing pills since my surgery but I've had to make sure I don't gulp too much Water when taking them. Heck, I didn't even get my meds liquified after having a Nissen Fundoplication and after that surgery I couldn't even swallow cold Water or berry seeds in smoothies!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
