Raechel 75 Posted December 10, 2016 Omg! I know exactly how you feel! During my stay in the hospital EVERY time I got up to go to the bathroom I got the hiccups! Very painful considering I was fresh out of surgery. Sorry I'm not more helpful but I just kinda dealt with it. In the hospital my surgeon said he could give me something for it but time felt silly asking for it so I never did. #1parrothead 7 Posted December 10, 2016 I was told it was from gas and will go away with time. 5 weeks out and I only get them about once a week. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted December 10, 2016 It's likely because your vagus nerve was irritated by the surgery. It runs along the top of the stomach and it is what controls all sorts of involuntary actions in the upper body like hiccups, burps, runny nose, etc. As you move on to solid foods you may notice that when you eat too much you get a weird reaction such as a runny nose. This means so much food is crammed into your stomach that the vagus nerve is being pressed on and irritated, It's a good cue to eat less next time. In the meantime, those post-op hiccups usually do eventually go away as the nerve recovers from surgery. Good luck!
blizair09 3,250 Posted December 11, 2016 I get the hiccups at least once per day, but it is quick -- just a couple of them and then they go away.
