How did you tell your younger kids about your surgery

Recommended Posts

I have younger kids and 2 of them have autism. My routine has been different pre-op because of me not eating normally. One of my kids are very nervous acting. I told them mommy will be hurt for a little while and I won't be able to do much. He keeps worrying and telling therapist mom is going to hurt herself. Any better way to explain it.

Thank you, it is a little harder for one of my autism kids. The other doesn't seem to be bothered. I think the hardest thing will be keeping them from wanting to be on me. She is sensory seeking and loves running into people. My other little boy is very nervous. Plus dad is having surgery on the 29th as well. We have older kids to help out but don't want them to obviously get upset.

I have 6 kids with Down syndrome, three of them have Autism. Only two can really understand whats up. However, I had breast cancer 2 years ago so they're all kind of "used" to me being down for a couple of days. All I told mine was "Mom is going to have surgery to fix her tummy." That's it. I didn't say anything about "hurt" or "pain", because that would freak my kids out. I have one "crasher" who loves to crash into me. I wore my corset thing outside of my clothes the first couple of days home. That helped her remember she could not crash into me. I did show my two with the most understanding that I have small incisions. (one of them, the girl, saw all my breast reconstruction wounds, plus has had major liver surgery so this was nothing to her. Look up liver transplant incisions and that is what hers looked like.) I just say things very matter of factly, don't describe anything that doesn't need to be described.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
