Vinasu 621 Posted December 10, 2016 Under FMLA, you do not need to disclose protected health information. Read this article: https://www.troutmansanders.com/common-misunderstandings-about-medical-leaves-of-absence-12-12-2012/ Telling them you are have surgery, and bringing in documentation from your doctor should be sufficient. Anna Nim 196 Posted December 10, 2016 I think the basics of when you will be gone/returning is enough, along with any work restrictions. Your manager is likely getting pressure from the boss and they usually are worried about scheduling of humans (and how it will affect them), the exact nature of your surgery is likely just a curiosity. My job (I am a teacher) has not ASKED...although ironically, on the "vauge" note, the Dr.s put on it their Baratric letterhead. LOL
PrimaGoddess 18 Posted December 10, 2016 That actually is illegal. Sent from my SM-T310 using the BariatricPal App
Dee~Dee 107 Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) You do not have to be specific... It is illegal for your manager to require it. I just told them my doctor found it "medically necessary for me to have a procedure and has certified that I need time off from _____ to _____. If your manager asks for details tell them point blank " I dont want this company to violate my rights to privacy so I will only say it is a procedure that my physician has certified a medical necessity and FMLA has approved". They will get your point. Sent from my 5054N using the BariatricPal App Edited December 10, 2016 by Dee~Dee
Ignatius 110 Posted December 10, 2016 You should be able to work directly with your human resources department. That's what they're there for. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My4Brownies 283 Posted December 11, 2016 Yes I went through HR to inquire about FMLA, we use UNUM, I called and they asked my questions ( surgery date,my end work date, surgeon info, expected time out etc..and they started my process..they even seen paperwork to surgeon n UNUM sent info to my Hr and to me that it was approved. I told my supervisor that I was requesting FMLA from this date to this and gave enough advance notice I gave 2month notice so they could prepare staffing..I was being generous ....other than that she knows nothing..sent her a email when I was retuning n been back at work since..sleeved Nov 9th back at work since Monday after Thanksgiving.. Sounds like your folks are being noisy over being professional.. Up to you if you like that with them but I wasn't (im private about me at work anyway) n it wasn't the whole office business. Good luck with surgery. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

Sent from my SM-G928T using the BariatricPal App Im curious... Even if you communicated with the supervisor as they ask.. Couldnt you just tell her the same thing "I had a procedure my doctor certified was medically necessary and im returning on _____ date?" Im not sure I'm clear on the problem? Im also out on FMLA so any insight is helpful. Sent from my 5054N using the BariatricPal App
