If I'm struggling now, will I cope after?

Recommended Posts

I'm three days into my preop diet on Optifast and I'm hating life right about now. I can't stomach the shakes as I did a month of a shake diet a while back and now the smell makes me gag. I'm living off optifast Desserts and bars as I don't like the Soups either. I'm having a bit of diet jelly in between but I am struggling. It's not even about the how little I'm eating but more about the cravings for normal food. I'm grumpy all the time and don't know how to snap out of it. I guess I didn't realise how badly I was addicted to food and how much life revolved around it. Surgery is booked December 22nd which I'm going to need my positivity to get through Christmas and new years but at least then i wont feel lile eating. It was now or next year for surgery due to work. Can anyone give any advice to try and get away from the focus of food and what I'm "missing out" on. I know in the long run this is such a small part, and it's going to get harder before it gets great... I guess I'd just love some encouragement. No one around me really gets how much I'm struggling right now with such a change in diet. Any other stories or struggles are welcome too!

You can do this! Oh how I remember! Im 11 weeks out and my darlz, its all gonna be worth it. Try a different shake mate meaning a different brand. I could only stomach the chocolate Optifast but I had to put lots of ice in it- goes down better really cold. Keep the bigger picture in your head - you can do this! Who cares if your grumpy because soon enough your going to be the happiest you have ever been!

You got this!

Pre-op is totally different than post-op so don't worry. Very few people sail easily through pre-op. It is a constant struggle because you are detoxing, fighting habits, fighting cravings, and hungry all the time - grumpiness and headaches too. You are doing great. Just keep telling yourself that it is temporary and that you can do anything for a few weeks.

Can you hide the Protein powder? I made my own broth and add unflavored Protein Powder. I was allowed Protein pudding also - a box of sugar free, fat free instant pudding mix with 2 scoops of unflavored Protein Powder added in.

Keep up the good work!!

The pre-op diet was the hardest thing of all for me. I told Mrs LittleBill to just plan on my being grumpy the whole time. She said it wasn't so bad, but then she puts up with a lot.

If you can tough out the pre-op diet, you should do fine post-op. It won't always be easy, but getting through it makes what will come a little easier.

Optifast is disgusting. I did not do it. I found another shake that was better and substituted that. The hardest part in the pre-op diet followed by the first 3 or so weeks after surgery...then it starts to get easier. You just need to hang in there.

Your food addictions are fighting your body and mind right now. You CAN get through this and come out stronger on the other side. I felt this way giving up Diet Coke and sweets. I haven't had any since August 1st and I'm doing much better now. I was slightly hangry but I kept thinking of the future. Those few weeks are just that, a FEW WEEKS. My difficulty during that time didn't define my success since having surgery. It will get easier. Best of luck!

My surgery date is also Dec 22nd! I started pre-op on Thurs and failed miserably because I wasn't prepared. After picking up a variety of approved "Clear liquids," and having a better plan, Fri was a breeze. Even though it's all liquids, having a schedule/menu might help. Also, everytime you drink what you're supposed to, remember to be super proud and praise yourself for sticking with it. Don't let your mind get flooded with negative thoughts. You got this!

Hi

I'm in the middle of pre-op right now. 2 Protein shakes a day and a meal with lean meat and veggies. Next week I start Clear Liquids before surgery on Saturday. Have you heard of Ideal Protein? They have pre-made shakes along with powdered shakes and ones that would count as clear liquids. I also use Promasil by Rivalus Protein Powder. The milk chocolate and the soft serve vanilla are good. My friend also recommends the Cookies and cream one. Just other options to try. I bought Promasil at the local GNC.

Good luck and you (and we) can do this!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
