chuswysly 122 Posted December 10, 2016 My doctors advised I should take a PPI (Nexium24) for a minimum of 3 months after my sleeve surgery. Since I am almost 4 months post op I just stopped taking them yesterday. I have been experiencing some pretty severe stomach cramps since then. Did anyone else have that problem when you discontinued your PPI? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
SimiStar 37 Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) My doctor recommended I try to wean off around 3 months. So I started taking them every other day. Now at 4 months I'm still taking them but more like every 3 or 4 days. I know it's time to take once my acid starts showing up hard. I'm trying to push through some minor discomfort since I don't want to be on them long term. But I've heard lots of Drs recommend a 6 month to a year being on ppi post op. I'm hoping my stomach learns to regulate on its own so I'm not so dependent Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Edited December 10, 2016 by SimiStar
FrankyG 1,450 Posted December 10, 2016 I stopped mine around 4 months. The doc told me to make sure to not eat at least 2 hours before bedtime and to try chewables for relieving any daytime discomfort. I've also been more aware of certain foods that kick up reflux/heartburn. Mostly citrus for me, not spicy (thank goodness!) One of the big reasons the doc told me he wanted the PPIs for short term use only is the recent studies showing an Alzheimer's link and also kidney issues when taken long term. trekker954 421 Posted December 10, 2016 I was told to stop cold turkey after 3 months. But from reading others issues, rather than cold turkey, the first week, I took one every other day, the second week every third day, then completely stopped. I haven't had any issues. My gallbladder was removed with my sleeve if that matters.
