Gastric Sleeve with Hiatal Hernia repair

Recommended Posts

Hi. This is my first post here. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on Monday, December 5th.and was discharged home yesterday. My doctor is wonderful. He went ahead and repaired my hiatal hernia while he was in there so that I will be less likely to get my acid reflux back. Anyone else have the Hiatal Hernia repair done at the same time and how long did it take for you chest/shoulder to stop hurting?

Thank you ahead of time for your responses.

I think it depends on how big of a hernia. I had a small hiatal hernia. My pain was gone by day 4 but I did take a ppi. Every once in a while (twice so far) I get a dull pain in my shoulder while I lay down but it quickly goes away. I am now 12 days post op.

Hi there. I had my sleeve plus hiatal hernia repair yesterday and the surgery went great. I'll admit though that when I woke up in recovery and was much bed to my room, I was in a lot pain. Just under my ribs and where my hernia. I'm still uncomfortable, but I'd rate my pain at 3 out of 10. Walk walk walk. That's helped me out more than anything. The staff at my hospital, Rex, are great and are making sure I sip sip sip Water and walk up down the halls. Not a lot of sleep, but I truly believe a lot of walking is the key.

Happy for you and good luck!! Feel free to IM for anything.

Thank you for your responses. I felt really good at the hospital and walker a lot on my own because it did help. However, the hospital pharmacy would not take my health insurance and I had to wait to get my pain medication until the next morning. I had a "moderate" sized hiatal hernia according to my doctor. I hope the pain when breathing deeply and with swallowing liquids will go away sooner rather than later. I am making myself drink the required Water and have been able to drink the 64 oz. Today I start the Protein part. Should be interesting. :}

That is great. I have not heartburn since my surgery on Monday. Just pain when swallowing and breathing deeply. Otherwise I think I am doing pretty good. Though I keep needing to go back to sleep every 1 to 2 hours. Ready for that to quit, lol.

Thanks everyone. It is just nice to have a conversation with people who understand and are going through the same thing.

How are you going now? I had VGS with large hiatal hernia repair on 6th Dec. The last 2 days have been better but basically I have pain when swallowing (in my chest) then spasms under my right rib cage. I am just sticking to fluid/smoothy consistency to get Fluid in / not enough really. Yesterday I had a small amount of Protein shake as a sorbet (blitzed with Water and ice) - that went down well. I am still waking with reflux pain. Walking certainly makes it better and I am looking forward to the next stage where I can tolerate soft food. Even something warm would be good but ice feels better at the moment. I am also sleeping a fair bit. It sounds gloomy but overall I feel pretty good - just want to fast forward the next month

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

      I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
