6 wks out and feel blah

Recommended Posts

I'm now 6 weeks out, s/p Bypass. I vomit on a daily basis, sometimes multiple times a day. It doesn't matter what I eat or drink. Sometimes it will stay down and other times it won't, even Water. I'm really tired. Can't even stand up in the shower by myself anymore. I don't even have the urge to drink or eat most days. I've had to go in for IV infusions just to keep hydrated. My doctor doesn't seem too concerned. He just keeps giving me more and more meds to try and take and most of the time can't hold them down. Since my surgery, I haven't been able to hold down any Protein Shakes. I drink maybe about 6-8 oz of Fluid generally in a day. Some days I eat nothing and other days I may be able to have a bite of applesauce or 2 bites of an egg. Will this get better soon? Anyone else go through this?

Has he said anything about a possible stricture? I would ask that question. I have known others with the same symptoms and they had a stricture that was not allowing fluids or food of anykind to go down.

I am sorry you are having a complication. I hope they get it figured out soon. I cannot imagine how weak you feel.

I asked him about that last week and he said he didn't think it was necessary to do an EGD because he doesn't think I have one. I've made an appt with my GI doctor, but can't get in with him until the beginning of Jan. I'm not sure I even trust my surgeons opinion at this point.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
