I have diabetes type 2, that was the main reason why I decided to do the surgery. I am 3 weeks post op and my sugar level is still in 150-160 range. Good part that I do not inject Victosa anymore. So far I lost 24 p. and was hoping to see the numbers go down more. Very frustrated!

Does anyone have the same problem?.

Prior to my sleeve I was on Victoza and two oral medications for type 2 diabetes. After the surgery I stopped the Victoza and one of the oral medications. I continued to monitor my blood sugar on a daily basis and continued to take Metformin. I met with my endocrinologist about two months after surgery and based upon my daily sugar levels and an A1C of around 6, he took me off of the Metformin. Now I no longer need to see an endocrinologist and my primary care physician orders A1C's about twice a year.

If your sugars remain in the 150-160 range, I would suggest checking in with your primary care physician or endocrinologist.

That is great! How long you are after the surgery? I also was on Victoza and 2 Metformin. After the surgery the doctor took away Victoza and 1 Metformin, but since my sugar level is still on a higher level I take now 2 pills. Maybe the time frame is still short. I have the appt. with my endocrinologist by the end of this month.

I am over a year out (my sleeve was done in Sept 2015). After 2 months, I stopped taking Metformin. All of my subsequent A1C's have been under 6.0 taking no diabetes medications. Hopefully when you meet with your endocrinologist the end of this month you can stop all your meds as well. Good luck!

While some people will wind up leaving the hospital free of diabetes medications, more typically the longer one has been under treatment for it the longer it can take to fully get off the meds. My wife had been on diabetes meds for close to twenty years at time of surgery, and was just short of needing insulin in addition to meds, and it took her the better part of a year to be fully off of the meds (and that's with the DS, which is a stronger treatment for it.) The really good news about it is that she hasn't seen any diabetes meds or test strips for over ten years.

Makes sense, I am on the medications for almost 25 years and added Victoza 7 years ago. I hope that over the time my diabetes will go away.

Thank you for your reply!

I have type 2 diabetes was on metformin , victoza, and insulin pump. They stopped metformin victoza before surgery. I am still on my insulin pump but the amount of insulin required every hour has decreased.

My endocrine doc said even though I am type 2 some peoples pancreas act like type one the longer you have been diabetic. Everyone is different. My sugars 75-170

My husband is scheduled for surgery 12/21 and is diabetic. He is only on metformin. His A1c has been steadily going down the last 2 years. His pre-op blood work showed it at 5.1. I am hoping and praying this means he has a good chance of coming off completely. I'm also scheduled for 1/9 but not diabetic.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
