Just had surgery on 11/29 and I have a couple of questions...

Recommended Posts

I had RNY bypass on 11/29 . My incisions are healing nicely but it one large incision of my left side can be agonizing with a slight sneeze or cough. I finally had a BM today on day 6 post op.

How long do the incisions pain last? Have any of you had trouble getting in hydration fluids? I get all of my Protein, but it is hard to get the 64 oz on top of the Liquid Protein shakes.

I haven't vomited yet. I find my anti nausea medication makes me feel nauseous.

My weight is starting to come off from my liver shrinking diet high of 362lbs. I just really want my recovery to be a textbook case.

Oh yes I'm 7 weeks post on and still have trouble getting both in. Keep trying your best. It takes time to get it all in but The more you get in the better you will feel.

Hello love.

Concentrate on staying hydrated! I didn't have Protein shakes at first since it was too much for me. My surgeon suggested to concentrate on hydration. Popsicles do wonders too!

I had my RNY the day before you. I have found if I cough or sneeze I have one incision that is just not happy. It has gotten better. Just watch it and if the pain increases make that call to your Dr.

I have found I have difficulty with finding things I like now vs before surgery. Drinks/soups that were fine before are not great now. It's a work in progress.

I too have been told hydration, hydration, hydration. Unlike you, I have been told the Protein shakes count towards the hydration totals. That has made it much easier. I still try to get all my liquid in. Sometimes I add Protein powder to crystal lite etc and that helps to get both in. Also, if you can have Jello, you can make it with Protein drinks. Instead of using the Water you can use something like Isopure and whichever flavor matches your Jello, use a cup of cold Isopure in place of the Water.

Also, I've found referring back to the lists, recipes etc that my nutrionist gave me for each stage has been a big help.

Good luck to you! It's certainly an adventure, but you are not in this alone!

The left side is where the majority of the work is done, that's the reason for the pain. I had my surgery on Nov 12th. I still experience pain there, when I cough, sneeze and bend over. It's way better today than it was when I came home. I came home on the 14th. The pain killer medicine does cause Constipation. So you may need to take something like Miralax but check with your doctor. I had to do that for a couple of days and everything is good today.

Keep up the work. Drink your Water its important and to take your Vitamin supplements. I use the patch versions from Bariatric Pal Store. Protein is important to prevent hair loss.

Honestly I think the pain depends on the person. My husband and I had the surgery done the same day and he only had pain for 5 days total. That was including the hospital stay. I on the other hand had the pain for almost 2 weeks and I couldn't get enough fluids in for those 2 weeks because I was in so much pain I had no energy to eat or drink and it hurt when I did. Hang in there it'll only get better. Don't push yourself to hard and keep trying to get as much Fluid in as possible. I had to use a step stool to get on my bed for a full month because the wrong movement would make that incision ares hurt. Like I said it'll get better just be patient.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
