Anxiety/ Antidepressant meds (SSRI) post op

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have had my first consultation with my surgeon. Hoping to have the Bypass next March, yippee!

However, I am scared that I will experience malabsorbtion after the operation. I am currently on an SSRI and a SRI (antidepressants) and they are essential to my wellbeing, my worry is that after the op, my medications won't be absorbed properly and that I will have complications with the medication. The surgeon assured me that it wouldn't happen, he said that its more Vitamins and minerals that are concerned with malabsorbtion. Anyway, has anyone had any problem with malabsorbtion and antidepressants?

P.S I am currently over 145kg. Apparently my ideal weight is < 90kg. Fingers crossed :)

Kind Regards,

Ashley

Yes I have changed my ssri since surgery. Also bear in mind that this doesn't necessarily mean that the change was due to malabsorption...

Many things will change after your surgery and your medication might just be one of them. It's a huge psychological shift to go through this process and it's a complete lifestyle change.

If you approach this holistically you will be fine

Hello

I was on antidepressent before my surgury amd different medications. Now I am a week for my 1 year anniversary. I am on some medications I was before but on a lower dose which is great and a fewmi stopped taking because the weight loss helped so much. I may go back on something mild for my anxiety and surgury will not cause malsorption. Only thing just causes malsorrption is Vitamins and that is why it is important to buy good vitamins. Trust me weight loss will help you in so many ways and also help with your depression because you wlll feel more confident and happier. I do have to say in the beginning of surgury many people including myself do experience some depression and regret for having surgury but this is temporary due to the weight loss and hormones but being on something will help you and this period only last a short period until your body goes back to normal. Your surgeon and suooort from positive people will help you and also writing on a daily journal is a great start. :).

I take Zoloft and haven't had to change a thing. I also was taking XR adderall and changed to "regular/non XR " It wasn't lasting all day as it had pre RNY.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
