What to do with all of our old clothing??

Recommended Posts

I bought two long sleeved Ts in an extra large yesterday instead of the triple X which I have been wearing and they looked good and weren't too tight! I am going to wear 'em with my baggy pants. This way one section of my body will look normo. Sometime soon I am going to be a decent bra. Right now I only wear jog bras. These don't lift and separate. They smash 'em down flat. I also bought a pair of skinny cropped jeans in a size 12. The 10s fit but they gave me muffin top. Muffin top looks real sad on a 58 year old woman, eh. blehhh!

And, oh yah, I have always given away a lot of my clothes to friends and charity during my trip to fatville and now that I am moving to normoland. It is just that I cannot bear to relinquish the linen stuff....

Our support group has a clothing swap. You can bring you stuff in and others who are passing through that weight phase can use the clothes. I think it is a great idea.

I just took 2 suitcases full to a friend. I hope she won't keep them for very long, I told her to give them away when she is done.

If they are nice and decent items, you can always eBay it and make some $$$ to get new clothes. I never would have believed it, but I made over $1000.00 last year on used baby clothes!! That is what I am planning to do. Your best bet would to "lot" a bunch of them togther, that way your getting rid of more than just one item at a time!

Good luck!!

I bagged up all my clothes and chucked them in one of those donation bins. Lets say there is some large poor person out there sporting a bunch of Polo and Nautica clothes ! LOL :)

I actually received some pants from a fellow bandster on LBT that helped me through a "phase". I offered some clothes to a friend, but gave most of mine to the local thrift store. I need to go through my closet and drawers again because I am passing through another "phase". I tried to put off buying new clothes by wearing belts, etc, but I'm starting to look like a bag lady!

Alot of my clothes now have been given to me.

I've worked at national level charities and I know too much about what goes on behind the scenes to donate anything to them.

I tried freecycle but (like Alexandra) had some unsavory experiences of the "I'll take everything, what else ya got?" kind. Then I saw some of the things I had given away for sale on ebay.

So I posted some on ebay. I made $$$ off them, seriously! More than I paid. But it takes time, and who has that?

I've given away bags and bags to local bandsters, but now I'm prety much out of touch with them.

My short term solution - I have seriously rented a storage unit to house the clothes. And other things as well, don't get me wrong. But I know there's a minimum of 20 "Ziploc XXXL bags", 20 - 30 Rubbermaid totes, 10+ 55g trash bags, and two 100g storage chests crammed full of clothes. And that's just the stuff I can remember. Let's not forget everything I've forgotten, and everything around the house still.

Yes even at 32+ I was a clothes horse. Now I'm between 14 & 18, and I bought a full wardrobe for every single size. That's a LOT of clothes (and I don't even want to think about how much money!)

I've been seriously considering taking them to one of those "sell your ebay stuff for you" places. They take like a 10% - 15% commission, but handle everything including the shipping. Similar convenience, I would imagine, as consignment shops.

SERIOUSLY thinking about doing that.

Wheetsin....

I'm ultra familiar with ebay issues and those places that sell on your behalf, I wouldn't do it. You'd be lucky to get a buck per item.

What if you did this, what if you take 10 size "X" shirts, put them together and sell as a lot. Just group them by size. Who wouldn't want to bid on 10 reasonably priced shirts that are the size they need? You will typically get more lookers for small lots vs. a single outfit unless it is a really special outfit. Something designer, in fashion, current trends, etc. Then do that one individually.

I think you'd make more money and shipping... flat rate priority mail. Print the label from your own printer, charge the shipping to your PayPal account, throw 'em in a box, tape it up, the mailman will pick it from from your house. You don't even have to take it to the post office. Priority Mail will be picked up. You don't even have to come up with a box, order them for free from the PO and they will deliver them to your home. Couldn't be easier.

I've been waiting to be banded for over a year and have resisted buying clothes. Does anyone need any size 26-28 rags?

Wasa, I need to try that. I see lot items all the time, but never thought about doing it myself. Not sure why. But it would be easy enough to do, most of my clothes are along the same fashion & colors of each other. I very rarely sell on ebay but when I do, I take advantage of the free shipping arrangements you can get through USPS. They're pretty awesome, actually - and IMO much more reliable than the other options.

If I was in touch with more local bandsters I could save a ton of people a ton of money, but I gave up on support groups (never really my thing) about a year ago. For a while there were a few ladies I would still meet up with - all smaller sizes than me, go figure. :heh:

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
