Cheating with the Scale - a Mind Game

Recommended Posts

Today I stepped on the scale and it showed I lost some weight. Instead of being excited my mind instantly thought okay I can eat this fatty food for lunch. WHAT!

My mind instantly wanted to cheat all because the scale was whispering, you lost some more weight. It is like wrestling with the devil. I won't reach my goals if I eat every time the scale shows I'm down--I will just yo yo.

Repeating to myself--Be Strong and Ignore the Scale.

Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

This journey is more a mental exercise than anything else...

The scale is just the outward condition of your choices. There's gotta be a mind change. And believe me it's a challenge to work on those thoughts.. They been with you for such a long time.. The body only takes what we give. Read the book the battle field of the mind. What you thinking.....

I'm having the same issue some times. It's all a mind game. Surgery is a tool that will def help but the mind will play with you if you let it.

I have said this at least 1000 times. Weight loss surgery is 90% head game, 10% surgery......

I literally have to talk to myself before getting on the scale so my head is in the right game.

I had considered donating the scale to Goodwill but it was expensive and realistically it's a necessity for other members of my household. I have been trying to weighing once a week since my surgery 10/25.

On Friday I took the scale to my friend house to help her weigh some boxes she was shipping and decided to leave the scale there.

Now I Can't weigh myself at home and stress about every ounce.

I totally know what you mean if I go to the gym and did a two hour session I lose all sense I want to eat the house down so suffice to say I'm gaining instead of losing.

I see a lot of posts here about 'don't look at the scale' and 'the scale is not your friend', but my relationship with my scale is very different. Maybe it's from years of Weight Watchers, but I NEED that daily/every other day check on my WL progress. I'm motivated by seeing a loss and more determined to stay the course when I don't see any change. The idea of NOT weighing makes me anxious! Maybe I'll drop to once a week in maintenance, but for now, me and my Aria are best buds ;-)

I'm the same way.

That's how I see it too. I have weighed myself almost every day for almost four years and I've recorded it in MyFitnessPal.

Yeah, it just depends on if someone can handle to normal fluctuations without it completely ruining their day. I was that way at first, but then I got used to it. During the losing phase it may not be as important as I feel it is during the maintenence phase. I don't know how people can avoid a scale and at the same time hold themselves accountable? After all, avoiding a scale is what got me to 235 pounds!

I've weighed every day for years. I find it very motivating. If my weight is going up for a few days I try to eat less or make sure my sodium intake is lower.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
