I don't want to weigh!

Recommended Posts

It may seem odd, but I don't want to weigh after my surgery (hopefully in the next month). I just have issues with the number and when I'm dieting , I could lose 3-4 pounds in a week but I'm never satisfied with the loss. I always think it should be more and then I just give up. At most, I'd like to weigh once a month but is there a need to document the weight loss more frequently? I'd like to just follow the doctors orders and judge my success on how my clothes fit but is that realistic?

It is totally up to you. If you get bothered by the scale do t do it. I weigh but my true joy and feeling of success comes with smaller clothes and how good I feel.

I weigh because I like to know where I stand every day. It takes a lot for me to lose a size so for me the scale is more effective at showing my progress.

Do whatever makes you comfortable. If you want to weigh monthly or weekly or whatever it is, that's your choice.

No need whatsoever to step on the scale if you don't want to. I only ever weighed about once every 3-4 weeks. As long as you are getting your Protein and fluids and following your meal plans, you will lose. For me, the NSVs were my measure of progress and way more fun to track anyways. Others like to see those numbers every day and that's fine. Just do whatever you feel most comfortable with and what will allow you to be successful.

It's realistic if you find that it works for you. If it doesn't work, it's not a great idea.

Lots of people want to weigh often because it keeps them honest. I don't have a scale and won't until I feel the need or interest in having one. As long as I eat properly, I know I'm good. I know that a scale doesn't keep me from pouring ice cream down my gullet. When I have a doctor's appointment of any sort, I get on the scale. That's me. If you believe it will work for you, there's one way to be sure.

You might want to think a little more about "I just have issues with the number and when I'm dieting , I could lose 3-4 pounds in a week but I'm never satisfied..." That thinking may turn out to be a stumbling block. Measured against how long it took you to reach a weight that suggested surgery and how long you stayed there, is losing so rapidly really an emergency? If you eat properly, you will lose at the rate your body releases the pounds. It's that simple. Don't look for way to pressure yourself with extreme expectations.

Be kind to yourself.

The scale becomes an addiction for many people. They discount the positive things that are happening with their weight loss if the scalar doesn't reflect the number they want. They build up expectations and are disappointed when it's "only" xx lbs lost.

The scale is a snapshot, not scientific. Someone might weigh, eat a cupcake, then weigh again and show a loss of .5 lbs. The natural conclusion? Eat cupcakes to lose weight! Our weight is dynamic and changing all the time. Getting upset over a 1-2lb gain is going to release cortisol which is a stress hormone that promotes weight gain.

Getting worried over nothing can literally give you something to worry about.

I weigh once a week when I am home. More because I am curious. I'm expecting a stall any week now (haven't had one yet) and I'm not hung up on the numbers. I feel good, my clothes are getting looser, I see it in my face and hands, my rings are loose - so I know I'm going the right way.

I use the scale daily to see if what I'm doing is ok or do I need to modify. But I think doing the opposite is just as good. Following the guidelines, moving a lot, feeling your clothes get loose, feeling stronger, that's all the "tell" you need!

Good luck!!!

Another thing you can do is use a measuring tape to measure your arms, chest, abdomen, and hips. I have huge calves, and I wish I would have measured those too. Once a month, measure yourself, and you can not e weight loss that way. The scale is not my friend. The doc said that we can lose 1 to 3 pounds a week. But we have to remember that weight fluctuates up and down, and we shouldn't rely on a scale to tell us. There will be many stalls through this journey, and we just need to remind ourselves that stalls or plateaus are normal. Keep up the great work!

I had surgery on Halloween. The first 2 weeks I only weighed at my 1 and 2 week follow up appointments with the surgeon. Since then I only weigh on Mondays. I plan to keep just weighing once a week forever if I can.

Most people weigh every day and our weight fluctuates daily. Then they will beat themselves up about what they did "wrong" the day before. They also say they are in a "stall" if the scale stays the same for 3 or 4 days. It is ridiculous to call that a stall. A true stall would last a lot longer than that.

The way I see it is I am doing everything I am supposed to be doing. I can hardly eat anything, if the scale doesn't go down there is no way I could eat less. I probably need to be eating MORE but at this point I can't. So what would a "bad" reading on the scale do for me??

I am losing great by the way :)

I am almost 6 weeks post sleeve, 100% on plan and almost never hungry .

I was trying to weight once a week but even that was driving me nuts. I took the scale to a friends house on Friday.

Smartest thing I've done since deciding to have WLS.

I had to buy a scale after op as I have issues with it too. So I didn't weigh in until 2 weeks after. At the moment I try to do it every 1-2 weeks, to not get obsessed.

I think it's fine to weigh less often in the beginning, particularly if it impacts your mood. I do think once you are in maintenance it's important to weigh more often so the scale doesn't creep up and you can learn what works and what doesn't. For me personally, whenever I was gaining weight I was not looking at the scale and somehow always surprised at how much I weighed.

I can relate! I can tell my clothes are considerably looser. My Dr. scale said I'd only lost 5 lbs in the one week since surgery. I am, depressed! I see so many saying they have lost 10 or more lbs, or a lb a day since surgery. I've eaten stuff I shouldn't eat since I figured out my loss is so little. I am angry with myself. I ate a cookie and was ill for several hours following.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
