BMI Drops below 35 day of surgery?

Recommended Posts

Can they deny me?

Apart of my problem is that I YO-YO ....I can gain and drop pretty easy but when I drop I gain double. Not good for the heart.

Anywaysssss....will insurance all of a sudden say "no" if it comes back my BMI was too low? And by that point I will have already had the surgery

I doubt it, if your surgery is already booked why would they keep going back and looking at your weight? Once they approve you it is out of their hands.

I had a similar situation, BMI 40 with no health problems. I probably lost a couple of pounds pre-op with my easy 3 day per-op diet. I can't see any way that insurance would know that unless the hospital or your surgeon called them right before they rolled you into the ER.

Each insurance is different though, many ask you surgeon? Believe me, he/she wants to operate on you. That's how they make money.

They didn't weigh me on surgery day. I wish they did.

Where I had my surgery, they used our weight from starting preop, not pre surgery.

Also, our cutoff was BMI 30 and not 35.

Seems shady that they would deny you for following their diet plan and losing a few pounds prior to surgery.

My insurance uses my starting weight and bmi. I specifically asked because I was at 42 bmi with no health issues. Doc asked me to lose 15#'s that put me at 40 bmi. But I was also told if I weighed more than my surgery goal weight on day of surgery that the surgery will be cancelled.

You might want to ask your surgical team about what your weight was on day of surgery if you really want to know. I'm pretty sure they had to weigh you for anesthesia reasons.

I was told that once you approved for surgery, you are approved for a year (keep in mind all plans are different, but I would think that part would be across the board) all surgeons want you to lose weight before the procedure so that it helps to move the liver out of the way, and also to show that you are ready for it. Is there an insurance specialist at the surgeons office? I would inquire with them. Good luck in your future endeavors :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
