Surgery on Dec 27th. What did you replace food with?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am scheduled for my surgery on Dec 27th. I have completed all my dr appts that the insurance wanted, so hopefully it will be approved.

I am so excited for this surgery. I feel like I am being giving a new life. However I am worried about what to replace the food with. Does anyone care to share the things they did to replace the food?

Thanks All!

Eventually you will eat again, just in much smaller amounts. And what you can eat takes forever to get down. I am almost 5 weeks out and I feel like my entire day is taken up with trying to get my Water and Protein in. I think people further out just feel like they are eating like a normal person instead of a morbidly obese person.

That's a very good question, MickeyKat, and I have two answers.

First is the easy one... replace it with knitting, crafting, talking to friends on the phone, exercise, reading, biking, gardening, and all those other things you can "DO" to keep your mind/fingers/body occupied.

The second one is harder. For me, I have always eaten as a soothing mechanism. To soothe sadness or frustration or anger or boredom. Basically, I'm soothing some feelings and making myself feel better (temporarily).

An important person in my life, who is a recovering addict told me that recovery is hard, because you have to learn to sit with your feelings and not numb them away, and that it's okay to have uncomfortable feelings and just HAVE them, and not try and make them go away.

So my 2nd answer to "what did I replace food with?" is that I am replacing it with learning how to live with uncomfortable feelings, learning how to just sit with discomfort and feel it and move through it and then out the other side. It's hard but I want to practice it as much as possible. I feel like if I don't, I will just end up back in my original spot 3-5 years out. And I don't want to do that.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
