Weird that you are being pressured to have the sleeve, mine preferred the bypass. But lots of people are successful with the sleeve. My dr is conservative and said he will wait till the sleeve has been around 10 years before he can be confident of long term results . He still does them now, just with a caveat.

Go to YouTube and search WLS, VSG, and RNY. The sleeve is by far the most popular weight loss surgery these days and many people have great success with it. There are people making YouTube videos who have lost 200 pounds with the sleeve. While it is newer as a stand alone procedure the sleeve has been around for a long time, they used to do it as a first step for other more aggressive weight loss surgeries because there is so much less time under anesthesia with it.

Many people on this board have had great success with the sleeve as well, I am sure some will chime in :)

I was 315 when I had the sleeve on Jan 26th. Before the sleeve I was able to lose 182 pounds over many years. Since the surgery 10 months ago I have lost 95 pounds. My surgeon suggested the bypass and I told him I didn't want that surgery. He said he would do what I wanted but it was up to me to follow the food plan and do the exercise. The outcome would depend on me. We are both thrilled with my weight loss. I am 40 pounds from my goal. It may take me longer than 1 year to get to goal but I am so much healthier and happier now that I have lost a total of 277 pounds.

Some good advise was given as far as researching the different surgeries and the one that you will be able to live with. Tell your Dr that surgery is what you want and if he doesn't agree find one who will.

I wanted the sleeve in the beginning of this journey, but as I researched, and after my first consult with the surgeon, I told him about my long time reflux/ gerd problem. He,said " yes, many people get acid reflux worse, after the sleeve, AND he is,starting to see 4 to 5 years after the sleeve procedure the reflux is horrendous for many people and then they end up having a revision to RNY. So with that said, im not willing to chance this or,am I willing to do a revision. So its bypass for me. Also the bypass is the gold standard of WLS. But never the less, its all scary.

Good luck in your decision.

I was sleeved on 9/27 at 260 and am now down 50 lbs! I have had some nausea/vomiting issues and a bit of reflux. I was able to manage all of things with medication and patience. I am eating just fine now and feeling great!! I have an older cousin that was sleeved 10 years ago and is doing amazing. She looks great and is super healthy! My friend was sleeved a year ago and has lost 115 lbs and looks so good and is loving life. Neither had any extra recovery issues. I think both surgeries have both success and nonsuccessful stories. It's how you follow the plan but mostly patience and attitude! Definitely research.

It's your body. Only you will live with your choice. Don't let other people tell you what is right for you, if you know. I went with the sleeve, which was the advice of my family of nurses, Who explain to me some of the likely issues that occur with bypass and not with the sleeve. Particularly, long-term nutritional issues. For a long time, I thought any surgical procedure for weight loss was very extreme until I became so big that I was even more extreme than that. I am one year postop, down from over 300 pounds to 190, with about 40 pounds to go. Since either procedures a permanent alteration to your body, why not start with the less invasive action? (Sleeve)? But if you feel deep in your being that you really need the bypass, again only you will live with that so do what's right for you.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
