Drinking BEFORE eating

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to understand this, and I don't seem to quite get it. Why is it that we can't drink anything within 30 minutes before eating. I understand why we can't drink during and after eating, but it's the before that confuses me. Since Water just goes straight down the pipe, wouldn't it not be a worry to stretch the pouch if it's only before eating?

For the same reasons you can't drink during and after Water fills you up. If you fill up with Water you won't receive the nutients you need from food.

The way it was explained to me is that Water doesn't sit for too too long in you new stomach, but it does sit like anything else. You would get full off the liquid and not desire to eat your nutrients. I was also told that Water would help move food from the stomach into your intestines without a lengthy digestion stage in the stomach. I'm not a dr, so I just took the bariatric nurse's word on his, since I had the same question as you did.

That always seemed contradictory to me.

It's good to let food start digesting and let natural enzymes/stomach acids work in stomach before filling with Water.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
